SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I'Patent N0. 542,804,
" PATENT-i AL TOY.
dated July 16, 1895'. Serial No. 544,234. (No modal.)
To all whom, it may concern:
.le it known that I, HENRY V. PIAGET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, in
w Jersey, have invented cereful Improvements in an Opich the following is a specifitain new and us The object of in new and improve constructed that viewed throughlengthened in the producing comical The invention co with a. casin havin hel y invention is to provide a d optical v toywhich is so objects, persons, &c., when the same lappear greatly horizontal direction, thus and amusing eiects.v
nsists in the combination, g having sight-openings and also gpart of its top uncovered, of two prisms d -at an' angle in said casing in such a manwed through the v`two gh the sight-open# prisms by looking throu also consists in the construcnation of parts and details, as ndsetforth hereinpointed Aout in the claims. anying drawings,'forming a cation, and in which like e indicate like parts in all l is a front view of my im` Fig. 2 is a vertical transof the same on the line sa vertical longitudinal sameon the line 3 8 of an view of the same.-
h may be made of paste- ,is provided vin its front two openings B, having their centers ch-other a distance equal to the dis` nters of the eyes.
asing is about only onee bottomD and is coner edge vot' the front-A', .The remaining portion ng is open and the back ade quite-low, the edges/ e casing being inclined after, and finally In the accomp proved optical toy; verse sectional-view Fig.2. vFig.4=isapl The casing-A, whic board, Wood, or metal A with The top C of the c half the width of th nected with the upp as shown in Fig; 2.- of the top ofthe casi i placed v against nt A. and is ceplace for the lpnrposejol closingA A piece of plain glass G is the inner surfaceof the fro and at the sam vision.
' A triangular piece G is placed and secured' e time not to nterferewith the f of pasteboard orw'ood;n against thev inner surface of each end piece F ot the casingas- 1 shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and on the edgesroff said pieces F- the end -parts of two. polishedl prisms H and J are rested.- i p The prisms in of a triangle, that the base of the casing pieces G and the other p to hold the p'rism J in place M. is inserted between thepnsm plain glass G to hold the prism-Hr A wedge H and the inplace. y Y i. To use the optical toy the same isplaced in: 801' front to the eyes in such a manner that they" observercan look through the openings B; the open side and top'ot the casingfacingthe object to be-viewed. The two prisms when* arranged and combined in the manner shown `break the rays of light in such a ,manner/f, h them appear that all objectsviewed throng y greatly reduced in size vertically and greatly A extended in size horizontally, .whereby mosti i comical and entertaining effects are produced'. 9o Y Having thus described my invention, what'. Y. I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersV Patent, is- Y v 1. In an optical toyxj afasing of two prism /both being triangula held at an inclination of one prism being alon prism, substantially as scribed. Y f Y t 2. ,'In an optical toy, the combination with a casing, provided in one face with sightopenfv ings and having'part of'its ltop uncovered, of
the combination witli` s located in the same,` 9 5,* r inf cross section and; to each other, the base g the apex ofthe other:r herein shown and dethe openingsB to keep, utdust olmoisture two prisms held in said.` casing .apaninclina tion to each other, both prisms being trian- .gular in cross section and one prism having its base along the apex of the other prism, substantially as herein shown and described. 3. In an optical toy, the combination with a casing having sight openings in one wall and having part of its top uncoveredfot triangular pieces secured to the inner faces of the ends of the casings, two prisms, each triangular in cross section, rested upon the edges of said triangular pieces the baseot' one prism being along the apex of the other prism, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In au optical toy, the combination with a casing provided with sight openings in one wall, of a plain piece of glass placed against the inner surface of the wall provided with said openings, two prisms held at an angle to each other within said casing, and a wedge interposed between one of said prisms and the piece of plain glass, substantially as, herein shown and described.
5. In an optical toy, the combination with a. casing provided withl sight openings in one wall and provided with a top of about half the width of the casing and connected with the top of the wall having the openings, of two prisms held at an inclination to each other in said casing and a flange on the free edge of said top, the bottom edge of said flange resting against the top parts of the prisms, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesseshthis 7th day of Novem- 35 ber, 1894.
