VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,709, dated July 16, 1895. Application filed March 18, 1895. Serial No. 542,215. (No model.)

Be it known that I, THEODORE LINKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Valve, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves for use in controlling the flow of liquids, and, while capable of more or less general application, is designed more particularly for controlling the exit of water from a faucet or hose-nozzle.
The object of the invention is to produce a valved attachment for a faucet or nozzle in which the closing movement of the valve shall be in the direction of the flow or pressure of the liquid and hence aided by it, and the opening or closing of the valve may be effected by a rotation of the nose or tip of the attachment.
To this end the invention may be said to consist in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a faucet with the improved attachment in section secured thereto. Fig. 2 .is a detail plan View of the annulus and guide-bar hereinafter specifically described.
Similar reference letters and numerals are used in both figures to indicate the same parts.
A indicates a faucet of the kind used over a kitchen-sink; but, as is obvious, it may be of the high-fountain type used over pantrysinks, or it may be a hose-nozzle. The end of the nozzle is externally screw-threaded, as at a, to receive the collar or ferrule 1, which is provided with a polygonal or milled flange 2 for turning it in screwing it to or from the' nozzle. The collar is also provided with an external annular shoulder 3, below which the collar is contracted in the form of an inverted truncated cone, the inner surface of which forms a valve-seat 4, which may be ground or provided with a washer-seat. The cup or tip 5 of the attachment, which may be of any desired shape at the point of exit for the liquid, has its upper edge turned or spun over the shoulder 3and fits said shoulder and the exterior of the valve-seat so that it may be a screw -threaded opening, through which passes the screw-stem 9 of the valve 7. Above the Valve is a block 8, from which there extends upward a square pin 8', which fits a square hole in a bar 10, that extends across an annulus or ring 10, which is screwed into the collar 1 before the latter is secured to the faucet;
The object of the block 8 is to prevent the top of the valve from closing the end of the nozzle or the stem 9 being raised above and out of engagement with the bar 6, the said block being adapted to come in contact with the bar 6 before the valve and stem can have beenraised too high.
When theparts are in the position shown in Fig. l, the valve may be opened or closed by rotating the tip 5 through the medium of the wheel 12, which rotation causes the valve to be raised or lowered, owing to the action of the threaded opening of the bar 6 on the screw-stem 9, the said stem and the valve being prevented from rotating by the square pin 8' and the hole in the bar 10.
Having now described the invention, what I claim isr 1. A faucet or nozzle attachment comprising a ferrule or collar having a valve-seat and an external shoulder, a rotatable tip fitted to said shoulder and having a cross-bar provided with a threaded opening, a valve having a screw-stem fitting said opening, and means for preventing rotation of the valve while permitting it to be raised and lowered by the rotation of the tip.
2. The combination of the collar 1 provided with the flange 2 to affix it to the pipe or fancet A, and having the shoulder 3 and the valve-seat 4 and the-barred ring 10 having a square hole to receive the square pin 8" of the valve, with the valve 7 having the square pin and the screw-threaded stem 9, and the tip 5 having the flange 12 and the crossbar 6 provided with a screw-threaded opening to receive the stem 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
