SPECIFICATION forming part of'Letters Patent No. 542,540, dated July 9, 1895. Application filed December 5, 1894. Serial No. 530,847. (No model.)
Io all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAlAH H. SIMPSON, of Brunswick, in the: county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Pneumatic Firing Device for Firearms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of theinvention isio new and improved pneumatic firing device for-firearms, which is extremelysimple and durable in construction and easily manipulated.
The-invention consists of an air-propelled plunger carrying a firing-pin.
The invention also consists in certain parts anddetails and combinations of the same, as will-be hereinafter f-ully described,'and then pointed out in the claims.
dinary gun, and
-Ret'erence is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure-1 isa longitudinal central section of the improvement as applied on a'cane-gun. Fig. 2 is a" longitudinal vertical central section of the improvement as applied to an or- Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of, the same.
The barrel A of the firearm is connected at its breech end with a'cylinder 13 held on the stock 0, either made in the shape of-a handle, as illustrated in Fig. 1, or in the ordinaryform, as shown in Fig. 2. In the forward'ehd of the cylinder]; is arranged a partition D, formed with an opening E for the passage of the firing-pin F to engage and fire the cartridge contained in the barrel A.
The firing-pin F is held on a plunger-or piston G fitted to slide in the cylinder 13, the said plunger beingpropeiled rearward by with drawing the air from the rear end of the cylinder and the said plunger is propelled forward for firing the cartridge I by forcing air' provide 2.-
outside of the stock, so that the operator can apply his mouth to the outer end-ofv the said channel or pipeto withdraw air from therear end of the cylinder B to move the plunger G into an innermost position, as previously ex-" plained, and when it is desired to fire the gun G to propel the piston G forward and to ex-. plode the cartridge, as above mentioned. In
the operator blows into the channel or pipe-'- the forward end of the cylinder 13 is formed an air-vent B, through which air in front of the piston G can escape at the time the latter is propelled forward in the manner described.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1. A pneumatic firing device for firearms, provided With an air propelled plunger carrying the firing pin, substantially as shown and described;
2. A pneumatic firing device for firearms, comprising a cylinder, and a plunger fitted to slide in the said cylinder and carrying the firing pin, substantially as shown .andv described.
6o Having thus described my invention, I a
A pneumatic firing device for firearms,
comprising a cylinder connected at its rear 75' and a plunger fitted to slide in the said cylin-=- end with a channel or pipe for withdrawing air from the cylinder or forcing air therein,-
der and carrying a firing shownand described.
4. A pneumatic firing device for firearms, comprising a cylinder connected at its rear end with a channel or pipe for withdrawing; air from the cylinder or forcing air therein,
pin, substantially as and asplunger fitted to slide in the said cylinder and carrying a firing pin, the said firing pin being adapted to pass through an apertnTei-n'a partition hold in the front-cadettlie cylinder, to engage the firing pin with the cartridge, substantially as shown and described.
