setts, have invented an Improvement in Machines forthe Manufacture of Paper Boxes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
The machine to be herein described is an improvement on that described in United States Patent No. 418,690, dated January 7, 1890; and it has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of the parts whereby the durability and strength of the machine is increased and the adjustment of the parts facilitated, as will be described.
The particular features of this invention will be described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
Figure 1 is a partial view of the delivery end of a paper-box-making machine embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail chiefly to show the lip-turner shaft and adjustable lip-turners; Fig. 3, an end view of the devices shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an enlarged section across the lip-turner shaft. ' 418,690. It will also be understood that each half of the machine will contain like parts, with the exception that in practice the ejecting device (not shown) is solely at one side of the machine.
Each pressure-head H H has at each of its ends two like nuts H making four nuts for each head, each nut fitting threads on one of the pressure-shafts formoving the said pressure-heads. Each nut is mounted loosely in the pressure-head, so as to rotate therein, and has attached to it a gear H and each pair of gears H is engaged and rotated by one intermediate gear 4, adapted to rotate on a stud H (see Fig. 7 in section and Fig.5 by dotted lines,) carried by the pressure-head. There are two of these intermediate gears 4 for each pressure-head and they inesh together, and one intermediate gearhas attached to it a wormgear 5, (see Figs. 5 and 7,) which is engaged and adapted to be rotated by a worm on a vertical shaft 6, having its bearing in a part of the presssure-head, said shaft 6 at its upper end being provided with a suitable handle or hand piece 7, by which it may be turned by hand whenever it is desired to adjust the pressure-heads toward or from each other, to adapt the end wipers or plates d carried by them, to the thickness of the blank being made into a box or cover on the former.
With the pressure-heads H H properly adjusted to the size of the blank theyare reciprocated toward and from each other during the completion of each box and toward and from the usual former by the reciprocation of the slide-racks G, as provided for in the said patent.
In the patent referred to the end wiperplates were rigidly attached to an angle-plate adjustably secured to the pressurehead; but in case of any irregularity in thickness of the blank on the former the thinner portion of the blank to be pressed intoshape was not subjected to sntiicient pressure, and fre quently the corner where the stock was thinnest would not be properly pressed smooth or united. To obviate this trouble I have attached each end wiper-plate d to a block 8, having, preferably, a convexed back and adapted to rock on or about a vertical pivot 9, (see Figs. 5 and 8,) the convexed part entering a proper concavity in the pressure-head as a seat. The ends of this pivot enter and take bearing in lugs 10, attached to the pressure head at bottom and top by suitable screws, as 12. The uppermost lug 10 has a. countersunk hole, in which enters a locking-pin 13, resting on a spring 13, (see Figs. 8 and 14,) having a tapered point, (see Fig. 7,) the said pin normally acting to center or hold the block 8 with the face of the end wiper at right angles to the face of the wiper-plates 61 In case, however, of any variation in thickness of the paper of the blank bent over the end of the former F and between it and the inwardly-moving end wiper (1 then the said block, owing to the fact that it'is loosely pivoted, is free to turn on the pivotEl and adapt itself to the varying thickness of the blank, the conical point of the spring-actuated locking device or pin at such time, by its action against the edge of the conical-shaped hole in the lug 10, depressing the said locking device.
The blanks from which the boxes are to be made are in practice laid in a pile, as provided for and represented in the patent referred to, and while in this pile are kept in place by means of guides, which are held adjustably in place by set-screws. In this my present invention I have devised means whereby the said guides at each end of the pile are adapted to be adjusted simultaneously, which is a matter of great convenience and saving of time, and whereby, also, the
said guides may always be kept in the same relative parallelism under all adjustments. To accomplish this adjustment each end of each side guide 14 is provided with a nut 15, which nuts are entered by the right and left threads of the guide-adjusting screw-shafts 16 17. (See Figs. 1, 5, and (3.) These shafts have, respectively, bevel-gears 16 17, which are engaged by bevel-gears 16 17 at the ends of a shaft 18, so that rotation of the shaft 16 by the handle 16 will effect the simultaneous and equal adjustment toward or from each other of the two guides 14, one at each end of the machine. Each guide 14 referred to (see Fig. 6) has at its inner end a slotted projection 19, (see Figs. 12 and 14,) adjustably attached to it by a screw 20, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 6,) which is extended through a longitudinal slot in the guide 14, so. that the said projection may be adjusted in the direction of the length of the guide, in order to adapt it to the size of the blank in the pile. The patented machine referred to had substantially such a projection, but herein said projection is provided with a verticallyplaced stop 21, Which is made adjustable on the said projection 19 (see Figs. 1 and (3) toward and from the said guide, a screw 21 holding it in position, such stop serving to contact with the rear edges of the blank above the track B fully described in the said patent and designated by like letters, on which the undermost blank of the pile rests when being wet and pasted, there being a track for each end of the blank, but herein Ihave shown only one track. The blank is pushed along the tracks by a suitable feeding device. By making this stop adjustable, as described, so that it may be placed just over the track, it prevents any blank from being pulled backward under the stop by the returning feeder, as wouldbe possible should the blank sag at either side of the track and the stop he placed at a distance to one side the track so as not to be hitby the blank. So, also, this location of the stop enables the usual wetters and pasters to rise and not interfere with or strike against the stops. This guide 14 has attached to it near its delivery end, by screw 24, (see Fig. 1,) a longitudinally-adjustable block 2 having a vertically-extended guide-finger 26, against which the front edge of the blank is arrested, and up which it travels when the former, as described in the said patent, rises to lift the blank and pinch it between its own top and the under side of the cooperating follower 72. above it.
Referring to Figs. 1, 12, and 13, it will be noticed that the guide-plates 14 are provided at their lower sides with inwardly-projecting lips i on which lips ride the ends of the foremost blank as it is being carried forward by the usual feeder from the bottom of the pile of blanks, the inner end of the said lip being bent downwardly at 5, next the pile of blanks.
To reciprocate the racks G I employ a IIO slide-bar A at each side of the machine;
- and at its upper end said bar has an adjustable bunter A provided with a shoulder 40, which, as it rises,bunts against the projection 37 of the rack G and catches onto the latch 39 to pull down the rack as the slide-bar A descends. The slide-bar A slides in a sleevelike portion A? of a sliding cross-head F which has a sliding fit on the guide-rods A one at each side of the machine, the said cross-head in practice carrying the former, about which the blank is bent and shaped to form a box or cover. These parts are the same as in the said patent, and are designated by like letters. lnthe said patent the slidebar A was at times locked to the said sleeve A to lift the cross-head F and thereafter was unlocked, and while the cross-head was locked was further lifted to lift the racks G to put on thepressure. In the said patented machine the locking device, (herein marked 41,) was slid in one and then in the other direction by two elbow-levers actuated by vertical levers, which were struck by a rotating projection. In this present invention I have dispensed with the said elbow-levers and their actuating devices and have effected the longitudinal reciprocation of the locking device by increasing the bevel at the ends of the locking device and by providing the slidebar A and the guide A with correspondingly-beveled surfaces 28 and 29, the said bevels being preferably at an angle of. substantially forty-five degrees.
Referring to Fig. 10, it will be supposedthat the slide-bar A is on its upstroke. Now, as soon as the bevel 28 thereon meets the beveled end of the locking device the latter is pushed to the right and stopped with its inner end against the guide-rod A The bevel 28 acting on the locking device causes the crosshead F to thereafter rise in unison with the slide-bar until the inner end of the looking device enters the notch 30,it gradually sliding over the bevel 29. This inward movement of the locking device by the bevel 28 frees the slide-bar from the locking device and cross-head, so that in the farther upward movement of the slide-bar, while the crosshead remains at rest and locked in position by the locking device, the hunter meets the projection 37 and lifts the rack G5 to rotate the pressure-screws and" put on the pressure. As the slide-bar is drawn down, the hunter catches the latch 39 and pulls the rack down to remove the pressure from the box in the former, and as the rack reaches its lowest position the bevel 28 passes below the end of the locking device, and thereafter, due to the weight of the cross-head and the beveled surface 29, on which the inner end of the locking device rests, the said locking device is thrust to the left out of the notch 30 and the crosshead descends, and also the slide-bar A the latter being pulled down by itsconnectingrod. r 1
The lips at the ends of the side of the box blank have to be turned in and placed in close contact with the ends of the former, preparatory to turning down and over'upon them the portions of the blank to constitute the ends of the box.
Patent No. 420,901, granted February 4, 1890, to G. H. Cushmanand myself, contains lip-turners and means for actuating them at the proper times by the box blank itself. Such means, also herein shown, consisted essentially of rock-shafts B, having their journals at the extremities thereof in hearings in suitable ears or stands 13*, (see Figs. 2 and 9,) connected to the outsides of the side wiper-plates (1 the said rock-shafts being toothed or roughened for a portion of their circumference and being flattened for another portion, they deriving their movement by the contact of the box against the said toothed surface. (See Figs. 2 to 4.) The rock-shafts herein shown carry near their ends, between the toothed surfaces and bearings, lip-turners n, the hubs n of which are split and clamped on the splines 32 at the ends of the shaft by suitable setscrews 31, inserted through ears of the said hubs. These lip-turners are thus made adjustable longitudinally on the said rock-shafts inside of the bearings for use with boxes of difierent size, for a different former must be used, and in the construction shown in the patent referred to the bearings for the rockshaft would prevent the employment of different formers and also prevent the adjust ment of the lip-turners to co-operate therewith. The threaded pressure-screws, the pressurehead, and sleeves or nuts loosely mounted and rotatable in the said pressure-head, and herein shown and described, are not claimed herein, as they form the subject-matter of claims in another application filed by me November 17, 1893, Serial No. 491,273, and allowed DecemberlO, 1894.
I claim 1. The pressure head, combined with the rocking block and its attached end Wiper plate, and with a yielding locking device for the said block, substantially as described.
2. The stationary tracks B the side guides having nuts at their ends, longitudinally adjustable blocks 19 on said guides, and the horizontally adjustable stop 21 for each block, and the cross shafts provided with right and left hand screws with which the said nuts are engaged, combined with the connecting shaft 18, and engaging bevel gears on said connecting or cross-shafts whereby the said side guides are made adjustable simultaneously by rotation of the connecting shaft, substantially as described.
3. The adjustable side guide, and its longitudinally adjustable block 19, combined with the horizontally adjustable stop 21, and tracks to support the blank to operate, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the former, and the rock-shaft B having splined ends, and bearings therefor at the extremities of said ends of the lip-turners n provided with hubs laterally adjustable on the splined ends of .name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
