SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,148, dated July 2, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN D. DAVIES, ot' Butte city, county of Silver Bow, and StateV of Montana, haveinvented a new and Improved Matte and Slag Separating Vxell, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists ot a well provided with two compartments of different heights connected with each other at or near the bottom, one compartment being provided with an outlet for the slag and the other with an outlet for the matte.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of the improvement with parts broken out. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a rear end perspective view of part of the improvement; and Fig. 4 is a plan View, partly in section, showing the separating-well in connection with the furnace.
The improved matte and slag Separating well is provided with a casing A, made of a suitable material and formed with two compartments B and C, located one alongsidethe other and both preferably lined with iirebrick or other suitable material. The larger and higher compartment B is adapted to receive the molten metal from the tap-hole of the furnace, and the said compartment is provided at its rear end and on the top edge with a notch D, forming an outlet t'or the slag passing through the notch upon a suitable spout D for leading the slag to one side ot` the well. Next tothe notch D is arranged a verticallydisposed slot E, adapted to be closed by a metallic plate or gate F, `held in brackets G secured t0 the end of the casing, as is plainly shown in Fig. 3. In the partition H', between the compartments B and O, is arranged an opening H, located near the bottom of the casing A and serving to conduct the matte from the compartment B to the compartment C,vthe latter being provided at its upper end and on the top edge with a matte-discharge notch J, leading to a suitable spout J for carrying the matte to one side into a suitable receptacle to be further treated.
It will be observed that the spout J is lo-V cated at a lower level than the spout D. The partition H and the lining A are made ot refractory material, such as a composition of one part ot' tire-clay and five parts of quartz.
In the end of the compartment C is arranged a tap-hole I, located opposite the taphole H, as is plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and above this tap-hole I in the top ot' the end of the compartment C is formed a notch Kfor guiding a bar orother tool to the tap-hole H, to open the same. when required, and as hereinafter more fully described.
The operation is as follows: The casing A with the tap-holes H and I close in the usual manner, andthe slot E, closed by the plate F, is placed in such a positionnear the furnace U that when the latter is tapped then the molten metal from the furnace flows into the compartment B, with the matte on the bottom and slag on the top. Whenv a Sufficient amount of moltenmetal has accumulated in the compartment B, then the tap-hole H is opened or tapped to permit the matte to flow through the tap-hole H into the compartment C. The lightest portion of the slag iiows out through the spout D', so that an automatic skimming is obtained. After the skimming is over the operator opens the slot E by removing the plate F to permit the slag to run out of the compartment B. When about eight inches of matte and one inch of slag is left in the compartment B, then the tap-hole I is opened and the matte and the slag run out to empty the casing. Now, the door of the furnace will be as near the head of the Well as possible, so that there will be a distance of about two and one-halt feet from the discharge-spout of the furnace to the slag-spout. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A matte and slag separating well, provided ment being provided with a matte discharge and a tap-hole, substantially as shown and described.
