WELL-BUCKET.
5PECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,120,dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed December 29, 1894. Serial No. 533.244. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TILFORD, of Wartrace, in the county of Bedford and Stateot' Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Well-Bucket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the'invention is to provide a new and improved well-bucket, which is comparatively simple anddurable in construc tion, arranged to readily fill itself automatically when lowered into the well and drawn out, and to be conveniently emptied into apail or other receptacle after the bucket is raised to the ground.
The, invention consists principally in a bucket provided in its bottom with' a valveseat in which is fitted to slide a tube open at the lower end and carrying at its upper end a fixed disk valve adapted to be seated on the upper face of the bucket-bottom.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, showing the valve open to permit of filling the bucket with water when lowered into the well. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 20f Fig.1, show ing. the valve closed and the bucket filled. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and showing the valve open for discharging the contents of the bucket into a pailor other receptacle. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. l, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
The bucket A, of metal or other suitable material, is provided on its upper open end with a bail B, and in its bottom A is formed a central opening for the tubular stem 0 of a valve D, held on the upper closed end of the stem and engaged on its top by a washer E,
held in place by a bolt F engaging the closed upper end of the tubular stem 0 and also passing through the valve D. The latter is preferably made of leather, rubber, or other suitable material, and is adapted to be seated on the upper face of the bottom A to close the said'bottom, as indicated in Fig. 2.
In the tubular stem 0 and near the upper end thereof are arranged aseries of openings 0' to permit the water passing into the stem in an upward direction to discharge through the openings into the interior of the'bucket 6:
A at the time the valve is lifted off its seat, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the said openings 0 are above the upper face of the bottom A.
In the lower end of the tubular stem 0 and at one .side thereof is a cut-out portion 0 forming a spout for discharging the water properly into a pail or other receptacle, as indicated in Fig. 3, and also forming an inlet for the-water in case the open bottom of the stem 0 should be closed by contact with the 7;
bottom of the well or otherwise, whereby the admission of water might be prevented.
Near the lower end of the tubular stem 0 is arranged a transverse pin G, extending a suitable distance on opposite sides of the stem to abut against the under side of the bottom -A at the time the valve D is in an uppermost position, the said pin Gthus limiting the upward sliding motion of the stem of the valve and consequently preventing accidental dis- 8o placement of the valve and stem. Below the pin G is arranged a bolt H, likewise extending transversely, and carrying a holder or hook I, mounted to swing on the bolt and adapted to hook onto the upper edge of a pail or other receptacle to properly support the stem and bucket in position while discharging the contents therefrom, it being understood that when the said holder I has passed over' the edge of the pail and the bucket A is 0 permitted to move downward'then the stem 0 is held in a fixed position, and consequently the bottom A in sliding down on the stem causes the openings 0' to pass above the bottom, so that the water in the bucket can dis- 5 charge through the openings and stem to the lower end thereof and the said spout G into the pail.
Normally the valve Dis seated on the top surface of the bottom A, and when the bucket A is lowered into the well the holder I hangs normally below the lower end of the stem 0,
as illustrated in Fig. 1. Nowas the bucket moves down into the water the latter passes into the hollow stem and exerts an upward pressure thereon, so as to cause the valve to move upward into an open position, the upward movement being finally limited by the pin G, as previously explained. The bucket can now fill, and as soon as the bucket is filled and lifted the valve D seats itself to prevent discharge of the contents of the bucket after the latter is raised out of the water and up in the well to the ground. On reaching the ground the holder I is swung upward and hooked over the edge ot'a pail orother receptacle, and then the bucket A is lowered to discharge the contents of the bucket into the pail, as previously explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A well bucket, comprising a bucket proper having an opening in its bottom, a valve controlling the opening in the bottom of the bucket, a tubular valve stem secured on the said valve and fitted to slide in the opening in the said bucket bottom, the said tubular stem being formed with openings near its upper end, and a hook pivoted on the lower end of ,the said tubular stem, substantially as shown and described.
2. A well bucket, comprising a bucket proper having an opening in its bottom, a valve controlling the opening in the bottom of the bucket, a tubular stem secured to the valve and-fitted to slide in the opening in the bucket bottom, said stem being provided with openings near its upper end and having its lower end opened and its side wall provided with a cut-out portion adjacent to the lower end, and a hook pivotally mounted on the lower end of said stem, said hook being adapted to hang below the same, substantially as set forth.
