To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I,WILLIAM G. K-IRCHHOFF, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im- 5 proveinents in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to a hat-fastener; and

I the object of my invention is to produce a hatfasten er that will possess superior advantages in point of efficiency in holding the hat upon the head of the wearer, said hat-fastener to be easily manipulated and of minir mum cost.

My invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrange-1n ent of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a hat, the same having my fastener applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of an interiorly screw-threaded bearing, through which this form of my fastener passes. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form of my fastener. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a nut of which I make use upon this modification. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of an ordinary sailor hat, the same 0 showing the various forms of fasteners as applied thereto.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the body of my improved hat-fastener, which is preferably a 5 piece of steel Wire surmounted on one end by a head 2 of either plain or fanciful design. The other end 3 of the body 1 is attenuated. That portion of thebody 1 adjacent the attenuated end 3 is formed into a part of, or a 40 whole spiral or coil, as indicated by 4:. In some cases it is preferable to form but a part of a spiral, while in other cases, as shown, a I full spiral isdesirable.

A tightly-wound coil 5 is formed in the 5 body 1 above the spiral 4, thus forming prac tically a screw-threaded portion in said body 1. This portion 5 is adapted to pass through an interiorly screw-threaded bearing 6, that is provided With integral flanges 7, that adapts it to be mounted at any desired point in the crown of the hat.

In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the body 1 between the head 2 and the coil 4 is screw-threaded, as indicated by 8, and upon this screw-threaded portion is positioned a circular nut 9, the periphery of which is milled as indicated by the numeral 10. In securing and positioning a hat upon the head after said hat has been correctly positioned upon the head, the attenuated point 3 of the fastener is passed through the screw-threaded bearing 6, and by turning the device a half or complete revolution, the spiral 4: is caused to engage in the hair upon the head of the wearer. Then the fastener should be given a few turns in the bearing 6, thus rigidly holding the fastener at any desired point.

In the form shown in Fig. 3, after the fastener has been thrust through the hat crown and the coil 4 becomes engaged with the hair, the loose bearing or nut 9 is manipulated upon the screw-threaded portion 8 of the body 1 until it contacts with the exterior of the hat-crown, thereby rigidly holding said fastener in the required posit-ion.

A hat-fastener constructed in accordance with my invention will hold the hat upon the head of the wearer with much greater efficiency than the ordinary hat-pins that are now in common use. The attenuated end 3 So is not brought to a fine point, in order that said end will not scratch or wound the scalp.

Another advantage gained by thus forming a hat-fastener is that said fastener may be passedthrough the crown of the hat at any desired point, either in the top, on either side, or in the rear; also, there is but one aperture made in the hat.

Thus it will be seen how I have constructed a hat-fastener that combines simplicity, cheapness, and efficiency.

What I claim is The improved hat fastener, comprising the body 1 having a head 2 at one end and a spiral at its opposite end, a series of screwthreads. on the said body at a point inter-' mediate of said head and said spiral, and an interiorly screw-threaded bearing to engage the hat, and in which bearing said screwthreaded portion of said body engages, where- 100 by the fastener may be secuf'ely attached to the hat, substantially as herein specified.
