To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT MARTIN MAYES, acit'izen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and Stateof Texas, have invented a new and useful Dental-Chair Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to attachments for dental chairs, the object in viowibeing to provide a simple construction and combination of parts adapted for supporting a table for instruments used in operative dentistry, and also adapted to support a waste-bowl, a lamp, glasses and such other articles as are necessary in this connection; and furthermore, to provide such means for connecting the parts of the device that they maybe readily separated and assembled, as well as adjusted to take up lost motion.

Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a view of the pointed out in the appended attachment applied in the operative position to a dental chair. ,Fig. 2 is a detail view, partly in section, of the attachment, viewing the same from the front. Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of the bracket for supporting the lamp-table and rests for glasses. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the swivel for supporting the instrument-table. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the arm for supporting the wastebowl.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.

The attachment comprises a main staff 1 provided at its lower end with a horizontal arm 2 which terminates in a plate 3 for attachment to a dental chair such as that which is shown in full lines in Fig. l and is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, said plate being secured to the chair by means of suitable screws 4. The staff is further attached to the chair at intermediate points by means of extension braces 5 and 6, corresponding in construction and comprising a collar 7 which is secured to the staff, a stem 8 pivotally connected to said collar, a barrel 9 in which the stem fits to slide and which terminates in a book 10 to engage an eye 11 secured in an adjacent. portion of the chair. The stem 8 is held at the desired adjustmentin the barrel 9 by means of a set screw 12. The staff isfurther provided at an intermediate point with an integral socket 13, and mounted torotate therein is a spindle 14 at the extremity of a swinging arm 15, said arm terminating in jaws 16 and 17, of which the former is rigid, while the latter is pivoted to the arm by means of a pivot screw 18. These jaws terminate at their extremities respectively in a reduced ear 19 and a notch 20 for the reception of said ear, both members being transversely perforated, as shown at 21, for the reception of a pin 22. Shown in Fig. 5.

The waste-bowl is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and it will be seen that in order to remove the same it is simply necessary to displace the pin 22 by which the extremities of the jaws are united.

The upper portion of the staif 1 is reduced, as shown at 23, upon which is mounted a sleeve 24 forming one part of a bracket 25, said bracket comprising an angle arm 26 provided with a series of rests 27, and terminating in a plate 28, and a tension brace 29 which extends from the sleeve 24 to the upturned portion of the arm 26. A lamp-table-ZBO is adapted to be secured, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to the terminal plate 28, and glasses, retorts and similar articles are adapted to be arranged in the rests 27, which may be ring-shaped as in.- dicated in the drawings. The outer end of the brace 29 is supported by means of a small screw 31 which is carried by the upturned portion of the angle arm 26. Swiveled upon the reduced portion of the staff above the plane of the upper end of the loose sleeve 24. is a sleeve 32 having the lateral bracket arms upper end of the sleeve 32 is countersunk to form a conical socket 35, and threaded upon the upper extremity of the reducedportion of the staff is a conical nut 36, extended in alignment with the staff, and provided with a socket 37 for the reception of the stem 38 of a plate 39. cal arms 34. Thus the instrument table is swiveled upon the upper end of the s'talf and is detachable therefrom, and beneath said instrument table is a lamp and glass supporting bracket also swiveled upon the staff and capable of being turned to occupy a position convenient for the dentist.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit' or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of a staff provided at its lower extremity with means for attachment to a dental chair, intermediate braces comprising collars secured to the staff, stems pivoted to said collars, barrels for the reception of said stems and having terminal hooks, and stationary eyes adapted to be secured to upper portions of the chair for engagement by said hooks, thumb-screws being mounted on the barrels for engaging the stems, a wastebowl supporting-arm pivotally connected to the staff, a bracket swiveled upon the staif and carrying a lamp table and intermediate rests, and an instrument table swiveled upon the upper end of the stafi, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a stafi, means for attaching the same to a dental chair, and a waste-bowl supporting arm connected to the staff, of a bracket swiveled upon a reduced upper portion of the staff and provided with a terminal lamp table and intermediate rests, a sleeve swiveled upon said reduced portion of the staff above the bracket and provided with lateral angle arms having upturned terminals, a conical nut threaded upon the extremity of the staff and fitting in a conical socket in the upper end of said sleeve, said nut having an extension provided with an axial socket, and an instrument table provided with a central plate having a depending'stem mounted in said socket, and side plates having depending sockets to receive the upturned terminals of said angle arms, substantially as specified.
