I l fEBOUBLE-LLZMP.
EBatented'Nom2l0t11914.
To all/ whom it may concern:
wealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements iin I Trouble-Lamps, of which the following is a:
specification.
This invention relates to .dEIXlPS and particularly to a portable lamp of the class: These lam;ps; which are primarily intended for use about automobiles are usually electric lamps con-i nected'by a long flexible switch cord which permits the "lamp :to .be used on any :part of known as trouble lamps.
the car. *I-Ieretdfore these lamps have been simply electric bulbs and while Wery useful} they have "been of "only limited convenience on account of the *difiiculty of handling the light in the many di-fierent parts of a car:
i "the clamps 9 and 10 are interlocked fby 1a 275 11p .14 struck down from the clamp 9 and where illumination is needed.
provide a lamp which will not only have an increased convenience under-ordinary use: but which will have possibilities of varied additional uses and particularly to i-fit the possibility :of -.a semi-permanent attachment 1 at such a convenient place :as the robe rail? in the :tonneau iior the illumination of the rear seat and-the Tea-r steps.
The construction and-operati on 101 my *device will be more fully described in the M.
-. screw 25 passing vthrough the upper .Jframe specification which :follows.
In the drawmgs, trative embodiment a construction "which not only clearly illustrates any invention but is in itself a to m proven to beef :the great- 7 Y cosntruction.
est utility in p actical use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 "is a side-view of my. lamp. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the lamp mounted on a vsection of the robe Fig. 3 is :a partial central section rail.
' Figs. 4 and 5 are details of the-clamp member and Fig. 6 is a modification of the Flight,
i the bar 30 so as to disengage it from the focusing adjustment.
I have shown asan illusvIn the for-m of my invention shown, *1
provide a-circu' lar frame 1 having tan-arched extension formed with a bearing B. The upper part of the ibeariin 3 is hollowed out at 3 430 afford a :th'um hold, whilesat its lower part it is extended :at 4 in the form of a trigger shaped khoo'k adapted zto ibe en aged by the forefinger. At the lower en 10f the intone 1 is ormed .a -.-stub T5 in Wllldh the threaded stem 6 {is set. 0n fl1is :stem is screwed ahand'le lfhavingaxthreaded ":66 cup A clamping member "is iprowided which is run on the stem 6 and compresses against the stub 5 by 'the handle as it is screwed up. Thee-lamp which is :adaptedto engage a robe rail R or zany other com 7'0 venient bar or rod, consists of two members59 and 10 which are provided with the stem receiving :openin 1 1 .and'with clamp in'g jaws '12 and 13. he opposite ends of entering the slot "15 in the clamp 10. tl 'ithjin the bearing 3 is threaded ra wtu'biilar sleeve .16 on the mner end of 'n h idh is a bayonet joint 17 adapted to receive :an incan- 80 for focusing the light at any desired dis- .85
tnnce. 'The (reflector shell 21 i is :set within the frames 1 and "2 and at its outer edge is formed with a arim 22 in which thelens is set and held in place by :a ring-23. who inner :end of the reflector :212has'a tubu- .90
which may be of any "desired 10.0
The lamp may be'used as an ordinary hand lamp either by engaging the fore finger in the hook 4: with the'thumb on the hollowed out part 3 or it may be held by,
- its handle. ,The hook 4-furthermore can be used to hang up the lamp in any part of the engine or car and when so suspended the handle which extends belowthe level of the hook supports the lamp and prevents it.
- from tipping down or falling in. Forsemican be kept in convenient and accessible position.
Various other modifications may obviously be made in the operation and construction of my device all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended claims.
What I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. A lamp of the class described comprissaid frame,"a downwardly turned hook on said'fra'm'e, said frame having an oppositely "disposed thumb bearing.
2. A lamp of the class described comprising a frame, a source of light mounted therein, a" downwardly projecting hook on said frame, and a depending handle in advance of said hook level thereof. y
3.'A lamp of the class"describedcomprising an open frame, a reflector supported in and extending below the presence ing a frame, a source "of light mounted I therein, a downwardly projecting hook on said frame; a' depending handle in advance of said hook and extending below the level thereof and a swivel clamp adjustably mounted on said handle andbelow the level .of said hook.
4:. A lamp of the class described compris- .ing a frame, a source of light mounted there1n,and a clamp swiveled to said frame adapted for clamping engagement with a support, and means for tightening saidjaws.
6. A lamp of the class described comprising a frame, a source of light mounted therein, a handle, a device operatlvely connecting said handle and frame, and aclamping member swiveled to said connectlng device. I
7. A lamp of the'class described comprising a frame, a source of light mounted therein, a handle, a threaded stem operatively connecting said handle and frame, and a clamping member swiveled tosaid stem.
8. A lamp of the class described comprising a frame, a: source of light mounted therein, a handle, a threaded stem operatively connecting saidhandle and frame, and a clamping. membercomprising interlocked engaging jaws swiveled tosaid stem.
9. A lam of the class described comprising a frame, a source of light mounted therein, a handle, a threaded stem operatively connecting said handle and frame, and a clamping member comprising a pair of oppositely curved jaws swiveled to said stem. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature of two witnesses. Y THURBUR- F. RUSSELL. Witnesses VICTORIA LOWDEN, MARION C. HoBBs.-
