TOOL FOR USE IN CORRUGATING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,8 52, dated July 2, 1895.

. To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BIOKNELL HALL, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Tools for Use in Corrugating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

My improvement relates particularly to such tools as are used in the corrugation of '10 tubes. I

It is common in machines for corrugating tubes to use a rotary tool which, bearing withconsiderable pressure upon the tube, causes the indentation of the tube, and as the tube r 5 is rotated, or as the tool holder carries the tools about the tube, the indentation is continued about the periphery of the tube, so that it forms either an annular or spiral corrugation. Such tools and the machines in which they are used are now well known in the art,

but where the tool has a spiral projection or thread about its periphery for the purpose of causing the indentation, it is sometimes very essential that a certain point on the periphery of the tool shall first strike the surface of the tube and cause the beginning of the corrugation. Hitherto, so far as I am aware, no especial means have been employed to bring about this result with certainty and accuracy.

My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 illustrates in elevation the best form of my invention now known to me, Fig. 2 being an end view.

A is the tool holder which may be of any ordinary construction. As shown, it is an ordinary forked holder and in the ends a, a of the fork is journaled a shaft B carrying the tool 0 which is keyed thereto, so that the 0 shaft will turn whenever the tool turns. One

end of the shaft projects beyond one of the forks a and a weight D is attached to it. The

most convenient form of weight is that shown in the drawings, it being so constructed that gravity will always bring it to the position shown, when the tool is free. Being attached to the shaft B by set screw (1, it may be adjusted about the shaft so as to alter its relation to any particular point on the periphery of the tool.

My tool is used in a corrugating machine as such tools are ordinarily used, but whena value because, more particularly in making an annular corrugation upon a tube, it is essential that a certain portion of the tool act first to begin the corrugation.

This device is the first which regulates or adjusts the position of the tool in its first contact with the tube, so far as I now know, and being automatic in its operation, is the simplestway, as it now seems to me, for causing the desired result.

Vthat I claim as my invention is 1. The corrugatingtool above described, in combination with means whereby when not in 7 5 use, its position about its axis will be automatically adjusted to a uniform position, as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination with a corrugating tool and its shaft, the weight D adj ustably mounted on said shaft, as and for the purposes set forth.
