SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,824, dated Tuly 2, 1895. Application filed November 8, 1894- Serial No. 528,251. (No model.)

To ail whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID BASOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, inthe county and State of New York,

have invented certain new and useful Impro vements in Ear-Muffs, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.

This improvement relates more particularly to ear-muffs which. are provided with hinged connections between the ear frames and head bar, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described and then definitely claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inside elevation of an earframe and hinge constructed according to my improvement,-

with a section of the head bar attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the hinge. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the end of the headbar detached. Fig. 4 is a plan of a blank used in making the hinge.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A indicates the ear frame, which is made of wire bent to an oval shape and having its ends inclosed in the hinge part B. This hinge part is formed by stamping out of sheet metal a piece of the shape shown in Fig. 4, which is afterward formed in any convenient way, into the shape shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to form tubes 1) to receive the ends of the wire forming the ear frame and bearings Z) to receive the gudgeons 0 formed on the. extremity of one section of the head bar 0. The lower ends of the head bar are bent at right angles, or substantially so, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to form a stop for the ear frame when it is thrown open for use. i

In assembling the parts, the end of the head bar is turned at right angles to its normal position, with the gudgeons parallel to an aperture or slot 1) in the hinge part, and is then passed through it and turned to its normal position, when the end of the blank is turned down tightly over the gudgeous and the tubular part is bent'down over said end and. fastened around the ends of the wire ear frame, whereby the parts are all firmly connected together- By this means a very strong and neat yet cheap connection is formed between the head bar and the ear frames of an ear mod, that it is believed will prove very acceptable to the public.

What I claim as new is 1. In an ear-mutt, the combination of a sec tion of a head-frame having gudgeons formed on the end thereof, with an ear-frame and a sheet-metal hinge piece rigidly attached to said ear-frame, having a slot at right angles to the nearest adjacent edge of the ear-frame, and bearings for the gudgeons of the head piece in a line at right angles to said slot and doubled on itself over said gudgeons to secure the head piece in the hinge, substantially as described.

2. In an ear-muff, the combination of the ear-frame, and a section of ahead-bar having its extremity bent substantially at right angles and having gudgeons formed thereon, with a T-shaped sheet-metal hinge piece having tubes to receive the ends of the ear-frame wire, a slot 2) to receive'the end of the headbar section, and bearings for the gudgeons at right angles to said slot, and doubled on itself over said gudgeons to secure the head piece in the hinge, substantially as described.
