Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENEDICT FREY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GLAZE FOR BRICKS.
P11GITIEIGAEIIION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,735, dated June 25, 1895.
Application filed October 11, 1894. Eerial No.-525,544. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENEDICT FREY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glazes for Bricks, of which the followingis a specification. v
This invention has reference to an improved glaze for bricks, by which the face of the bricks is rendered waterproof and at the same time a pleasing whitish color is imparted to the same, so that the bricks are not required to be painted and are thereby specially adapted for the use'of interior walls in courtyards, air-shafts, 850.
My invention consists of a glaze for bricks, which is composed of a mixture of finely-pulverized'asbestos, feldspath and kaolin, which are mixed with water to a paste, spread over the face of the bricks and burned on the same.
The following proportions are used for preparing my improved glaze for bricks: three parts of finely-pulverized asbestos, two parts of finely-pulverized feldspath, and one part of kaolin which are mixed with water to a creamlike consistency and then forced through a finely-meshed wire-screen.
This liquid glaze is spread over the face of the brick and the glaze then burned into the bricks preferably at the time when the bricks are burned in the kiln.
The glaze imparts to the face of the bricks a soft whitish color of non-glossy appearance which is capable of resisting acids and moisture, which can be cleaned by washing and by which the bricks can be'used directly without requiring painting so that such bricks can be applied directly for all purposes for which heretofore painted bricks were used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A glaze for bricks consisting of a mixture of finely-pulverized asbestos, feldspath and kaolin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENEDICT EREY.
Witnesses:
PAUL GOEPEL, ETTIE SMITH.
