JAMES W. SNODDY, OF WARRENSBURG, MISSOURI.
ADVERTISING-DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 541,578, dated June 25, 1895. Application filed July 27, 1894. Renewed May 25,1895; Serial No. 550,721- (l lo model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SNODDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warrensburg, in the county of Johnson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an advertising device or toy, and has for its object to provide a simple and attractive apparatus constructed for continuous operation by a spring or other motor and adapted to serve as a means of advertising an article or articles of merchandise or of furnishing amusement.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of- Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. 7
1 designates a pair of adjacent supports provided with open-sided bearings 52. in which is mounted the pintle 3, and 4 represents a balanced bar provided with terminal figures or images, which may be fantastic in shape or design or may represent articles of merchandise. In the construction illustrated in the drawings the figures 5 are represented as resting or seated upon boxes 6 which are diminutive samples of boxes used for packing a food, medicine, or other article to be advertised, and the name of such .article may be placed upon the sides of these samples as upon the boxes which they represent and in which the article is placed upon the market.
In the drawings, thebase 7 is a larger representation of the same package or box as that shown at 6, and upon the lid 8 of this box are arranged the supports 1. The pair of supports 1, that are arranged. upon the lid 8, of the hollow base7, are adapted to be covered by a central bearing cap 20 that is fitted on the oscillating balanced bar 4, at a point centrally between its ends so as to fit entirely over'and around the upper end of the sup ports 1, whereby the bearings 2, will be covered and the pintle 3 protected from dust, dirt, and the like. Depending from the pintle 3 is an'arm 9, which is engaged with a slot 10 at the extremity of a bar 11 affixed to an escapement 12, said escapement forming part of a motor 13. In the construction shown this motor is arranged in the interior of the base 7, and comprises an arbor 14, a spring 15, an
escapement-wheel 16, and a train of gears 18 connecting the arbor'and escapement-wheel. The arm 9 extends downward through a slot in the cover or lid 8 of the box forming the base, and receives its motion from the bar carriedby the eseapement.
A central figure 19 is arranged adjacent to the pivotal point of the oscillatory bar 4, said figure representing a mythical, historical, or other character, and the said figure 19 is supported on an offset bracket 21 on top of the hollow base or box 7, atom side of the central covered bearing support for the oscillating balanced bar 4.
Having thus described my invention, I claim--- In an advertising device, the combination of a hollow base provided. with atop lid having an upwardlyprojecting pair of supports terminating at their upper ends in open bearings, said hollow base being further provided at the top and one side of said'supports with an offset bracket adapted to support an advertising figure, an oscillating balanced bar provided with a central transverse pintle working in the bearings of said supports and having a depending arm' projecting through an opening in the lid of said hollow base, a hearing cap fitted centrally to said balanced bar and inclosing the bearings therefor, miniatu re advertising receptacles fitted to the ends of the oscillating bar to balance the same and provide for the support of terminal advertising figures, and operating mechanism arranged within the hollow base and suitably connected with the depending arm of said pintle, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence, of two witnesses.
' JAMES W. SNODDY.
