. UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
ELI HAMBLETON HILBORN, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
CLI P FOR ATTACHING AND HOLDING IN BOOK-COVERS COUNTER-CHECKS, MANIFOLD COPY-BOOKS, &c.
SIPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,548, dated June 25, 1895.
I Application filed December 20, 1894. Serial No. 532,496- (No model.)
. ada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clips for Holding Counter-Check,
Manifold Copying, or other Books in a Book Cover, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clips for attaching books Ora series of leaves to a cover or holder, and the Object is to provide a holder that will receive the book readily and holdit securely, and, when required to be removed, will allow it to be detached easily and quickly, without regard to the thickness of the book.
To this end my invention consists in the combination with the base-plate provided with projections or ears at each end extending at right angles to the plate, and a hollow roll on one side of the plate, a curved grip-plate be tween said ears, having one of its edges rolled, a bail having its ends extending through the said ears and within the ends of the roll on the grip-plate, and a spring bearing upon the grip-plate to hold its free edge to thebase and having its end portions lying in the hollow roll on the base-plate.
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 shows my improved clip complete. Fig. 2 shows the base-plate with its upturned projections or cars, the hollow roll on one side, and the spring held in the roll. Fig. 3 shows the grip-plate with its rolled edge removed from the baseplate. Fig. 4 shows the yoke or bail for the clip. Fig. 5 shows the wire spring adapted to be held in the roller edge of the'base-plate, and Fig. 6 is a perspectiveview of the complete clip attached to a cover.
Referring specifically to the drawings, a is a rectangularly shaped metal plate which I term the base-plate. This base-plate is provided at each end with a perforated projection or ear, 0, which extends at right angles to the plate and is parallel with the other car. One side edge of this plate is turned over or formed into a hollow roll I). The plate, a, is perforated as shown to receive eyelets or rivets for attachment to the cover of the book or other support.
Between the ears, 0, c is pivoted a curved elastic plate, e, termed a grip-plate. This plate has one of its side edges turned to form a hollow roll, f, while the other is adapted to bear toward the base-plate, upon the book held by the clip. In the center of this gripplate is an upturned lip, 'i, by which it may be operated to insert or remove the book.
The two plates, a, and e are pivoted together by means of the ends of the rectangular wire bail, h, passing through the perforations in the ears, 0, c, and entering the ends of the hollow roll, f, of the grip-plate. This bail serves also to hold the'transfer sheet. The grip-plate, c, has its concave side turned toward the base-plate and isforced yieldingly toward the same by means of a wire spring, j, bent to form a wing or loop, 9, at its center which bears on the top side of the grip-plate, and has its end portions'extending in opposite directions and in astraight line andlying in the hollow roll, I), on the edge of the base plate. The ends ofv this spring are soldered or otherwise suitably secured to the plate, a, to prevent them from turning.
In the perspective view, Fig. 6, a book is shown attached to the clip and a transfer or carbon sheet is shown attached to the bail shown in Fig. 4.
Having described my. invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of a base-plate having a hollow roll on one edge and ears at each end extending at right angles to the plate, a curved grip-plate pivoted between said ears and hav ing one of its edges rolled, a bail connected to said ears, and a spring bearing upon the grip-plate and having its end portions lying in the hollow roll on ,the base-plate, substantially as described'and shown.
, 2. The combination with the base-plate pro- I vided with ears at each end extending outward from one side and at right angles to the plate, and a hollow roll on one side of the plate; a curved grip-plate between said ears, having one of itsedges rolled; a bail having its ends extending through the said ears and within the ends of the roll on'the grip-plate; and a spring bearing upon the grip-plate to force its free edge toward the base, and having its end portions lying in the hollow roll on the base-plate, substantially as described and shown. .7. a.
3. The combination with the base-plate provided with cars at each end extending outward from one side and at right angles to the plate, and a hollow rollon one side of the plate; a curved grip-plate between said ears, having one of its edges rolled and having alip thereon, a rectangular wire bail having its ends extending through the said ears and within the ends of the roll on the grip-plate; and a spring formed of Wire and having a central 100p bearing upon the grip-plate to force its free edge toward the base, and havingits end portions lying in the hollow roll on the base- [5 plate, substantially as described and shown.
