NEWSPAPER-WRAPPING MACHlNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. i1,318, dated J 11116 18, 1895.

in Newspaper-Wrapping Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Ourinveution relates to improvements in newspaper wrapping and wrapper addressing machines, and the object of the invention is to provide a machine by which newspapers can be automatically Wrapped, the wrappers pasted and the address to which the paper is to be delivered printed on the wrapper.
"With these ends in view our invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully pointed out and described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a machine embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on a line at one side of the path of the vertically-reelprocating folder. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the main frame of the machine. Figs. 5 to 10 are detail views, on a larger scale, illustrating the various positions of the paper, wrapper, and parts acting thereon during the folding and wrapping operation. Fig. 11 is a detail view of the vertically-reciprocating folder. Fig. 11 is a top view of the connection between this blade and the operating-lever. Figs. 12 and 13 are detail views of portions of the printing mechanism. Fig. leisadetail view showing in side elevation and plan one of the plates preferably employed to guide the pasting-roller.

On the shaft A preferably near one end thereof and beyond the main frame is mounted to turn therewith a driving wheel or disk D. The grooves Y are of less depth than the thickness of the arms 0 of the feeding table so that the upper surface of said arms normally lies above the surface of the cylinder Y; and on said arms rests a roll of wrapping paper E. The roll E is wound on a suitable core or support the ends of which extend through vertical slots in standards or uprights E on the frame A.
The central portion of the cylinder Y, between the grooves Y, which in the drawings is designated by the reference letter Z, is partially covered with a layer of leather or similar material Z. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4 this layer Z does not extend entirely around the cylinder but it is of such thickness that when during the. revolution of the cylinder it is brought between the arms 0 it projects above the upper surface thereof and bearing against the roll E serves to raise the same from said arms and by frictional contact said roll is revolved and a sheet of paper drawn therefrom and forced forward over the table T. The paper is forced over the table T and below a shelf F supported above and lying parallel to said table. A knife or cutter t is arranged transversely across the machine, it being fitted in suitable guides on the frame A below the feeding table, and said cutter is connected with mechanism to be hereinafter described by which after a sufficient amount of paper has been forced thercover to form a. newspaper wrapper it will be raised through a slot in the feeding table and sever the wrapper from the body of the sheet. The wrapper extends from the slot in the feeding table. through which the cutter 25 operates over another slot or opening e" in said table through which type, arranged to print the desired address on the wrapper, are'forced, by means described below.

The block U is connected in any suitable manner with the upper end of arod M the lower end of which is preferably threaded and extended through a passage formed in an inwardly projecting'lug m on a vertically movable block M extending through and adapted to move freely in a slot it formed in one of the legs or supports of the frame A. The block M is con-" nected, by means of a pin and slot connection, with one end of a bell crank lever B which is fulcrumed on a stud X supported from the main frame. To the other arm of this bell crank lever is attached an arm L on which is adjnstably mounted a weight L which acts to normally maintain the lever in the position shown in Fig. 1 and keep the vertically reciprocating folding blade f in an elevated position.
In the rear arm of the lever B is-formed a groove k which opens at its ends through the front face or side of the arm; and said groove is adapted to receive a pin a carried by a lug projecting from the wheel or disk D, so that as the driving wheel is revolved thelever-B will be turned on'its fulcrum and the forward end thereof forced downwardly thus causing the folding bladef to pass through the slot in the table T.
A paste receptacle J is mounted on suitable ways or guides on the frame A, below and in advance of the standard S, and said receptacle is connected by a rod or link K with the rear grooved arm of the bell crank lever, whereby as said lever is rocked or turned on its fulcrum the paste receptacle will be reciprocated horizontally. A portion of the rear end wall of this receptacle is removed so that a portion of a paste distributing cylinder Z therein is exposed. This cylinderZ is mounted on a shaft journaled in the side walls of the receptacle J and one end of which projects beyond the side of said receptacle. On the projecting portion of the said shaft is mounted a ratchet wheel; and on the same shaft is pivoted a small bell crank lever It; one arm of which is provided with a laterally projecting pin that extends into a slot formed in a bar j, which is pivoted at t to the frame A of the machine. To the other arm of the bell crank lever is is attached a pawl m which engages with the teeth of the ratchet on the shaft of the paste distributing cylinder.
' On the stud X, between the bell crank lever B and the frame A, is fulcrumed the lower end of a lever O. A link V connects this lever with one end of a reciprocating bar W, which is arranged in suitable ways formed in the frame of the machine and to the forward end of such bar is secured a folding blade 'g. A lug 6 extending upwardly from the shaft N has attached thereto the rear end of a bar or rod d, the forward end of such rod being enlarged to form a cam like head d which extends through a slot or passage in one of the bearings b, of a shaft onwhich is secured a cylinder b forming a part of the printing mechanism of our improved machine. The bearings of the shaft carrying said cylinder are fitted in suitable guide ways formed in depending arms I)? on the main frame, so that said bearings are capable of a limited vertical movement. This printing mechanism consists essentially of an endless type and an inking roller or cylinder 0'.
The type carrier T is preferably composed section, see Fig. 13, so as to take into the teeth of the wheels f g, and printing cylinder 2), so that as said cylinder is revolved, by
means to be hereinafter described, the type carrier will be advanced or fed along toward such cylinder one space or bar. A pawl k is pivoted to an arm h and engages with a ratchet on the shaft of the printing cylinder 1) so that as said cylinder is lifted, by means of the cam head 61 on the bar or rod d, the
pawl h being in engagement with one of the teeth of the ratchet, said cylinder will be turned one step and bring a new type bar 6' into alignment with the opening 6" in the feeding table T.
The inking cylinder or roller is arranged between the supporting wheel g and r the printing cylinder, and ink is applied thereto in any suitable and desirable manner. Such roller is preferably coveredrwith a layer of felt or similar material and, as shown in Fig. 1, the faces of all the type in the type carrier come in contact with such inked surface as said carrier is advanced toward the printing cylinder.
The paper and wrapper are, under the pressure of the vertically movable folderfforced down into a passage f formed in the machine and at thelimit of the movement of the blade the paper and its wrapper are held firmly in position in the path of the horizontally reciprocating folder g between pivoted fingers q r and the front wall of the passage f.
In arms or bars o, attached at one end to the sides of the paste receptacle J, is journaled a shaft carrying a pasting roller S. The ends of the shaft on which said roller is mounted project beyond the arms 1; and into guide ways 01 formed by the upper edges of plates n secured to the inner faces of the sides of the main frame. These plates n are of the form shown in Figs. 8, 9, 10, and 14. By reference to these figures it will be seen that as the paste receptacle is moved forward, the rollers will be first caused to travel for ward and down an incline n thereby forcing a portion of the wrapper against the surface of the paste distributing cylinder. See Fig.8. The roller S then travels in a substantially horizontal plane, as at n during which movement the paste covered portion of the wrapper is forced against the body thereof (see Fig. 9) and the wrapping operation completed. The paper and its wrapper are prevented from forward movement during the time that the wrapper is being secured in place by a depending fiange p, at the outer end of a forwardly projecting arm P, which is secured to the main frame, against which it is forced by the horizontally reciprocating folder g. As the paste receptacle continues to move forward the roller S is drawn up a slight incline, at n, and at the end of the movement of the receptacle J such roller has passed beyond the end of the arm P and from below the wrapped paper thus allowing the latter to fall into a suitable receptacle placed below the body of the machine.
In order that there will be no danger of the roller S coming in contact with the exposed surface of the paste distributing cylinder durin g its rearward movement, which would exist if such roller followed the same path traversed in its forward movement, we arrange above the upper edges of the plates n pivotal plates of. I These plates, which are, as shown in Fig. 14, preferably pivoted to a lug on the adjacent plate n, are so pivoted that their forward ends normally lie flush with the surface of the upper edges of the plates n beyond the inclined surfaces a thereof. In its rearward movement the roller S passes over the upper edges of these pivoted plates n (as shown in Fig. 10) and reaches its upper rear position without contacting with the paste distributing cylinder.
The operation of our invention may be briefly stated as follows: As the shaft A is rotated the paper contained in the roll E is unwound and forced over the table T. The newspapers, folded as they leave the printing press, are fed on top of the wrapper belowthe shelf F. The wrapper and paper are fed forward on the feeding table until the Wrapper aligns with the aperture or slot 6 in the feeding table is forced therethrough and the address is printed on the wrapper. At this time the pin a enters the groove k in the bell crank lever and turning said lever on its fulcrum causes the vertically movable folding blade f to descend and fold the paper and wrapper, as in Figs. 5 and 6. As the pin a is leaving the groove in the bell crank lever the pin 1) is in the groove in the lever G and such lever, through the link V, forces the bar IV and horizontally movable blade g forward between the rollers O P. The newspaper and wrap per are thus folded again and forced forward onto the top of the paste receptacle. As the blade g is withdrawn, by the action of thecam D and the blade f again begins to descend the paste receptacle is forced forward by the rod K and the roller S, as described, forces the overhanging or projecting portion of the wrapper first against the paste distributing cylinder and then. against the body of the wrapper.- WVhen wrapped the paper is dropped through the frame of the machine.
As the bladefis moved upward the paste re-' ceptacle'is withdrawn to receive thereon the next wrapper and paper as acted on by the blade g.
Having thus described our .invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame,a driving shaft journaled in said frame, of a feeding table mounted on the supporting frame terminating at one end in a pair of parallel arms adapted to support a roll of wrapping ICO paper, a feed cylinder secured on the driving shaft and having suitable grooves formed in its surface to receive the arms on the feeding table, and folding and pasting mechanisms connected with and adapted to be operated from the driving shaft, substantiallyas shown and described.
2. In a newspaper wrapping machine, thecombination with a supporting frame, and a driving shaft journaled in said frame, of a feeding table mounted on the supporting frame and terminating at one end in a pair of parallel arms adapted to support a roll of wrapping paper, and a feed cylinder secured on the driving shaft and having suitable grooves formed in its surface to receive the arms on the feeding table and having its body, between the grooves therein, of such form as to project above the upper surfaces of the arms of the feeding table during a portion of each revolution, substantially as set forth.
3. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the
combination with a supporting frame, and a driving shaft journaled in said frame, of slotted standards supported on the frameto form guides for the core of a roll of paper, a feeding table mounted on the supporting frame and having at one endapairof arms adapted to support a roll of paper, and afeed cylinder secured on the driving shaft and having grooves formed in its surface to receive the arms of the feeding table and its body, between such grooves, partially covered by a layer of leather or similar material, of such thickness as to project above the surface of the arms of the table, substantially as set forth. 4. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame and a feeding table mounted on the supporting frame, of a vertically movable folding blade adapted to pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having one end connecttd withthe vertically movable folding blade and having a longitudinal groove formed in its other arm and opening at its ends. through one face thereof, a wheel secured on the driving shaft and carrying a stud adapted to enter the groove in the bell crank lever as the shaft rotates, and a horizontally movable folding blade arranged below the feeding table and connected with the driving shaft so that it is reciprocated across the path of the vertically movable-folding blade at each revolution of said shaft, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame and a feeding table mounted on the supporting frame, of a vertically movable folding blade arranged to pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having one arm connected with the vertically movable folding blade and having a longitudinal groove formed'in its otherarm and opening at its ends through one face thereof, a lever, C, fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having a longitudinal groove formed therein and opening at its ends through one face thereof, a horizontally movable folding blade arranged below the feeding table and connected with said lever, and a Wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with two laterally projecting pins adapted to enter the grooves in the levers by which the folding blades are reciprocated, substangroove crumed on the supporting frame having formed therein a longitudinal groove which opens at its ends through one face thereof, a bar fitted in suitable horizontal ways in the supporting frame andcarrying a foldingv blade, a link connecting said bar with the le ver, 0, and a wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with laterally projecting pins adapted to enter the grooves in the levers by which the folding blades are reciprocated, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame, and a feed ing table mounted on the frame, of a verti cally movable folding blade arranged to pass through a slot in the table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having a longitudinal groove formed in one of its arms and opening at its ends through one face thereof, and its other arm connected with the vertically movable blade, a lever O fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having a longitudinal groove formed therein and opening at its ends through one face thereof, a horizontally movable folding blade arranged below the feeding table and connected with said lever, and a wheel secured on the driving shaft in a plane between the blade operating levers, and provided on opposite faces with laterally projecting pins adapted to en-,
ter the grooves in the blade operating levers, substantially as shown and described.
8. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the
combination with a supporting frame, a driv ing shaft journaled in said frame, and a feeding table mounted on the frame, of a. vertically movable folding blade arranged to pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having one arm connected with the Vertically movable folding blade and having a longitudinal groove formed in its other arm and opening at its ends through one face of said arm, a wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with a pin adapted to enter the groove in the bell crank lever and with a cam adapted to contact with the grooved arm of said lever during the time that said pin is out of the groove therein, a horizontally movable folding blade arranged below the feeding table, and connections between such blade and the driving shaft, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame, a feeding table and a vertically movable folding blade, of a horizontally movable folding blade arranged to move across the path of the vertically movable blade, a lever fulcru med on the supporting frame and connected with the horizontally movable blade, and having formed therein a groove which opens at its ends through one face thereof, and a Wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with a laterally projecting pin, adapted to enter the groove in the blade operating lever, and witha cam adapted to contact with said lever when the pin aforesaid is not in engagement therewith, substantially as set forth.
10. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame,a driving shaft journaled in the frame, and a feeding table supported on the frame, of a vertically movable folding blade arranged to pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having one arm connected with the vertically movable blade, a weight adjustably connected to the other arm of said lever, a lever O fulcrumed on the same center as the bell crank lever and having a longitudinal groove which opens at its ends through one face thereof, a horizontally movable folding blade connected with said lever, and a wheel secured on the driving shaft, in a plane between the blade operating levers, and provided with laterally projecting pins, adapted to enter the groove in the lever O and a similar groove in the weighted arm of the bell crank lever, and with cams D D substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
' 11. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame and a feeding table mounted on the frame, of a vertically movable folding blade adapted to pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having formed in one arm a longitudinal groove which opens at its ends through one face of said arm, connections between the other arm of said lever and the vertically movable folding blade, a lever, C, fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having formed therein a longitudinal groove which opens at its ends through one face of said lever, a
horizontally movable folding blade arranged below the feeding table and connected with the lever, C, a cutter carried by one end of a lever, fulcrumed on the supporting frame, and adapted to pass through a slot in the feeding table between the driving shaft and vertically movable folding blade, and a wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with laterally projecting pins, one of which is adapted to enter the groove in the bell crank lever while the other is adapted to enter the groove in the lever, O, and also contact with the free end of the lever carrying the cutter at each revolution of the driving shaft, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
12. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled in said frame and a feeding tablemounted on the frame, of a vertically movable folding blade adapted to'pass through a slot in the feeding table, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the supporting frame and having one end connected with the vertically movable folding blade, a paste receptacle mounted in ways in the supporting frame at one side of the path traversed by the vertically movable folding blade and connected with the other arm of the bell crank lever, a paste distributing cylinder mounted within and having a portion of its surface projecting beyond said receptacle, a pasting roller journaled in arms attached to the paste receptacle, 2. horizontally movable folding blade arranged above the paste receptacle to move across the path traversed by the vertically movable folding blade, connections between the horizontal movable blade and the driving shaft, and means carried by said shaft for rockingthe bell crank lever, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
13. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame,a driving shaft journaled in said frame and a feeding table mounted on the frame, of folding mechanisms, substantially such as described, a reciprocating paste receptacle, a paste distributing cylinder mounted on a shaftjournaled in opposite walls of the paste receptacle, a ratchet secured'on said shaft at one side of the paste receptacle, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on said shaft and having one of its arms provided with a pawl adapted to engage with said ratchet and its other arm provided with a laterally projecting pin which fits in a slot in a bar pivoted to the supporting frame, and a pasting roller journaled in arms attached to the paste receptacle, all-combined and arranged in the manner shown and described, for the purpose specified.
14. In a newspaperwrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft journaled therein, two folding blades connected with and adapted to be reciprocated from the driving shaft through intersecting vertical and horizontal planes, a paste receptacle mounted on the supporting frame below the path of the horizontally movable blade and parallel thereto, a paste distributing cylinder mounted on a shaft journaled in the paste receptacle, guide plates attached to the frame on opposite sides of the path of the paste receptacle, a pasting roller carried by arms attached to the paste receptacle, the ends of the shaft of said roller extending beyond the supporting bars and resting on the upper edges of the guide plates, and means for reciprocating the paste receptacle substantially as set forth.
15. In a newspaper wrapping machine, the combination with a supporting frame, a driving shaft, anda feeding table mounted on the frame, of a vertically movable folding blade arranged to passthrough a slot in the feeding table, a horizontally movable folding blade ar ranged below the feeding table, connnections between the folding blades and the driving shaft whereby said blades are reciprocated through intersecting planes at each revolution of the shaft, a rock shaft mounted in the frame and carrying a cutter which aligns with a slot in the feeding table, a printing cylinder adapted to be moved toward and from the feeding table, connections between saidxcylinder and the rock shaft, and a driving wheel secured on the driving shaft and provided with alaterally projecting pin or stud adapted to contact with an arm attached to the rock shaft, to move both the cutter and the impression cylinder toward the feediug'table, sub-. stantially as shown and described.
