Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STANTON, OF ASHLAND, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO YVILLIAM EGAN, OF SAME PLACE; MARY A. HARDIMAN ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID STANTON, DECEASED.
,CORPSE-COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 541,296, dated une 18, 1895. Application filed mum 11,1895. Serial No. 537,884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN STANTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashland, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented celtain new and useful Improvements in Corpse-Coolers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the be preserved, and danger from contagious'dis.
eases avoided.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, partly broken away, showing my improved corpse-cooler. Fig. 2 is a centrallongitudinal section of thesame. Fig. 3 is a plan View, the cover being removed.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral l designates a box, preferably made of thick wood and comprising. the bottom 2, parallelsides 3 and rounded ends 4, suitably secured together. This box is of a length and 3 5 width to receive an ordinarysized corpse,
but about twice the depth thereof, and secured to the said sides on the interior thereof, intermediate the top and bottom, are strips 5, forming supports for a board or platform 6, formed with a number of perforations 7. It is also provided near one end on the upper side with a head rest 8, and at thesides near each end with notches 9, which serve as handholds for placing the platform or board in po- 5 sition and removing the same.
Located on the bottom 2, intermediateof the ends are two transverse guide bars 10, forming a drip receptacle 12, provided with an outlet 13. Located between these bars and the ends of the box, are pans 14 and 15.
'These pans are preferably made of galvanized iron, and the one, 14, which is located below where the head of the corpse rests, is larger than the other and is designed to contain ice, while the smaller one 15, is to con- 5 5 tain disinfecting or deodorizing material. The pan 14.is provided with a pipe 16 leading to the drip receptacle. At each side of the box and near each end .is a hinged door 17, whereby access may be had to the lower 6:) part of the box for inserting and removing the pans.
The numeral 18 designates the cover of the cooler, adapted to be secured thereto in any suitable manner and provided withglass panels for allowing the corpse to be viewed. The head panel is hinged to the said top so that access may be had to the interior of the box without removing the cover.
In. using the invention the corpse is placed on the board 6, which is then placed in the box, resting on the strips 5, and the cover is then secured in position. The pans 14 and 15, containing respectively, ice and a disinfecting or deodorizing material or composiiion are then inserted in the chambers in the lower part of the box and the doors 17 shut. The cold air and the vapor or odor from the disinfectants or deodoriziug material will escape through the perforations in the board 6 So and surrounding the corpse will tend to preserve the same and prevent decomposition and render innocuous any contagious disease germs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a corpse cooler, the combination with the box, the strips secured to the sides thereof intermediate the top and bottom and the removable perforated board provided with a head rest, of transverse bars forming a drip receptacle, provided with an outlet, the ice pan having a pipe leading. to the drip receptacle, the pan for containing disinfectants, and the hinged doors near each end of the 5 box, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN STANTON. Witnesses:
JOHN J. GOLAHAN, EDDIE OURLEY.
