Be it known that I, CLARENCE M. SCHER- MERHORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Libertyville, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Filters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in water filters, and while it is more especially adapted to be attached to the conducting pipe leading from the roof of a building, yet it can be employed in other pipes, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specilicallyclaimed.
The objects of ,my invention are, first, to provide a water filter, which shall be strong and durable, simple and inexpensive in construction,.and effective in operation, and, second, such a device, which may be readily applied to the conducting pipe leading to cisterns, or other drain pipes, and may be easily removed therefrom, when it is desired to clean the strainer or filter.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a conducting-pipe, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a plan sectional view taken on line 4 4. of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the ilter detached from the pipe.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the diierent views of the drawings.
A, represents a conducting-pipe, which is made of any suitable size and material, but preferably of tin, galvanized iron, or copper. One side of this pipe is provided with an -opening a, around which and to the conducting pipe, is secured a projecting piece or extension B, which is provided at its outer end with screw-threads Z7, to engage a screwthreaded cap C, which is adapted to close the opening in said extended part. As shown in the drawings, the lower portion 0f the projecting or extended part B, is obliquely and downwardly inclined, to form a restand support for the removable filter or strainer D,
which is made of a semi-cylindrical piece having in its lower portion a number of perforations d, and atits upper parta transverse plate d. To the upper part of the perforated portion of the curved piece D', is secured a curved piece E, which when in position in the pipe, will tit snugly and vertically therein, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
Just above the upper part of the extension B, the conducting-pipe A, is provided with an internal annular flange F, which causes the waterin its descent to leave the sides of the wall or pipe, and to pass from said flange to the center of the perforated 'portion of the strainer, as is apparent. Below the extension B, and on the opposite side of the pipe therefrom, and within the same, is secured a stop or rest G, on which the lower end of the filter or strainer D, rests.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be seen and readily understood, that by the use of my strainer, all delcterious substances, such as leaves, mud, and trash, will be collected in the filter or strainer, in the passage of the water therethrough, and that the same may be readily removed from the pipe by unscrewing the cap O, and taking out the strainer from which the accumulations maybe removed. The strainer may then be replaced, and the cap again lfitted on the extension B,when the device is again ready for operation.
It is apparent that my invention my be applied to any kind of a drain pipe, by either taking out a section thereof and inserting in its stead, one containing my filter or strainer, or by providing the pipe with an opening and fitting there-around an extension or projecting-piece B, and providing the interior of the pipe with the annular ilange and rest or stop for the lower portion of the filter.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is- 1. In a water lter, the combination of a conducting-pipe having an obliquelyinclined hollow extension or enlargement on its side, provided with a screw-threaded opening and cap to cover the same, an internal annular flange above the extension, and a stop or supporting piece opposite and below the extension, with a removable strainer, having its lower portion perforated and yadapted to'rest the upper part of 'the lower end of the perforated portion to t vertically within the conducting pipe, the said strainer adapted to rest on the stop G, on the inner surface of the conducting pipe opposite the inclined part of the extension and on said inclined extension, substantially as described.
