Description

, B.KUPFER LE.
FILTER.
No. 540,993. v Patented June l'l, 1895.
Int/e12 to ,EDWARD KUPFERLE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FILTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,993, dated J nine 11, 1895.
Appl m l September 22, I894. Serial No. 523K793; (ll'o model.)
is a full, clear, and exact description, referward on the parts below said line.
ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of-filters, known as pressure filters, and which are adapted to be attached. to house water pipes, hydrants, &c., to supply a continuous flow or supply of filtered water, and my invention has particular reference to means for cleansing the filtering cylinder surface.
My invention consists in'features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is a vertical section through my improved filter. Fig. II is a horizontal section taken on line II II, Fig. I, looking down- Fig. III is a horizontal section taken on line III III, Fig. I, looking downward on the parts below saidTIne. Fig. IV is a detail view of a portion of one of the cleaning-brushes.
Referring to the drawings: 1 representsthe shell of the filter connected to a water supply pipe 2.
3 is a cap screwed onto the lower end of the shell and provided with a nipple 4 in which there is a passageway 5 leading from the interior of the chamber in the shell through which unfiltered water may be drawn on turning the three-way cock 6 to register with such passageway, and the exit 7 in the nipple, which is the position the cock is shown in in Fig. I.
8 is a nipple secured in the cap 3, on the upper end of which the hollow filter cylinder 9 is mounted, the joint between the cylinder and the nipple, being preferably made tight by means of an elastic ring or band 10 fitting between them in grooves in each part.
11 represents a spider loosely fitted to the nipple 8 so as to turn freely thereon, and to the arms 12 of which spider brushes 13 are secured by any suitable means of fastening.
These brushes are preferably formed with the bunches of bristles 14. arranged zigzag, as shown 'in Fig. IV, so that but two vertical rows of bristles are required to cover the space over which the brush travels. To the upper ends of the brushes a turbine 15 is connected and arranged to turn freely in the upper end of the filter chamber beneath the water supply entrance, so that the water in entering the filter strikes directly on the turbine and causes it to revolve and carry the brushes with it. Ihave shown the wings 16 of the turbine of straight form arranged tangentially, but it is evident they might be curved in form or any other suitable construction of turbine might be employed in place of the one shown.
The operation of my filter is as follows: When it is desired to draw filtered water from the interior of the filter cylinder, the cock 6 is turned so that its passageway registers only with the passageway from the interior of the cylinder, and the exit 7 in the nipple 4:, and the filtered water is permitted to fiow out of the filter; whereas when it is desired to draw unfiltered water direct from brushes bearing against the outside surface of the filter cylinder 9, remove accumulation of mud and other sediment that collect on it, and prevent the free passage of water.
13 is a brush secured to the lower side of the turbine for the purpose of cleaning the top of the filtering surface.
