WILLIAM HESTER, OF ROUND ROCK, TEXAS.
VSEEDER AND CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,663, dated June 11, 1895. Application file' Ann 2s, 1894. stanno. 509,324. (roman.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that L WILLIAM HEsTnR, a citizen of the United' States, residing at Round Rock, in the county of Williamson and State of Texas, have invented anew and useful Plow Attachment for Seed-Planters, of whichV the following is'a specification.
My invention relates to an arrangement the claim.`
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my complete machine; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig. 3, a horizontal section; Fig. 4, a detail perspective of the foot or plow-beam proper.
The reference numeral 1, indicates the frame of the planter, which may be of any kind, and which will not be further described. Secured to the front portion of the frame 1, and on either side thereof are the beams 2,
. which are one for each side of the frame and which are held in place by the bolts 3, passing into the frame.
From the frame 1, the beams 2 extend forwardly and inwardly and come to a juncture at a point a distance forward of the frame equal to about the length thereof. Here the beamsV are enlarged vertically and provided with the series of vertically aligned openings 4, whereby the draft clevis may be attached to the machine.
5 indicates a central and third beam, which is arranged between the beams 2, and is secured to the front beam by means of the tongue 6, arranged on the upper side thereof and provided With a bolt 7 passing vertically into the said front beam.
From the front beam of the frame the beam 5 extends longitudinally and forwardly and to a point even with the ends of the beams 2, to which beams the beam 5 is secured by means of a bolt 8 passing horizontally through the three. Arranged in the rear portions of the beams 2and 5, and just vforward of the frame 1, is the tie rod 9, which passes horizontally through each beam and is secured in place by the nut and head, as will be seen.
The? foot or plow standard is designated by the numeral 10, and consists of a bar curving slightly forwardly and having the plow blade 11 secured to its lower end. The upper end vof the standard 10 is bifurcated and the arms of such bifurcations are adapted to embrace the sides'of the beam 5, lying one on each side thereof, and held in place by the bolt 12. Formed in the arms of the said bifurcated end are the openings or bolt holes 13, which are vertically aligned and through which the bolt 12 is adapted to pass. By means of these openings the vertical position of standard 10 may be adjusted to suit the conditions under whichv the machine opcrates. Rigidly secured to the standard 10, about midway its length is the brace 14, which extends rearwardly and upwardly and meets the beam 5 at a pointr directly forward of the frame 1. Here the brace 14 is bent or turned to extend truly vertically, and is bifurcated so as to'embrace the beam 5. 15 indicates a bolt which is passed through the arms of the aforesaid bifurcation and through the beam 5 and whereby the parts are held in place.
The arms of the bifurcation in the brace 14 are provided with graduated bolt holes 1,6, which will permit adjusting thebrace in unison with the adjustments of thestandard 10.
The operation of my invention will be understood. Upon the progressive movement of the machine the plow blade 11 will operate to open the furrow, whereupon the planting mechanism will operate to drop the seed therein.
Having described claimis- 1 In aplanter, the combination with a frame provided with seed holding and conveying demy invention, what I Avices'and furrow closing shovels, of twin forwardly convergent braces 2 secured. at their rear ends to the sides of the frame and terminatin g in contact at their front ends in vertical enlargements provided with transversely aligned perforations, a central bar bolted at its rear end to the center of the frontend of IOO rear ends, and a standard for a furrow openmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in' in g shovel secured to and carried by the centhe presence of two witnesses. tml bm', said pelfomtons in the enlargements at the front ends of the braces being designed WILLIAM IIESTER'. 5 for engagement by e eievis, substantially as Witnesses:
specified. ROBERT SWODDY,
In testimony fha-t I claim the foregoing as W. H. CUNNINGHAM.
