W. W. ALEXANDER.
ELECTRIC 011101111 No. 540,620. Patented June 1 1, 1895.
UNITED STATES I PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM IV. ALEXANDER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE GILL ALEXANDER PLACE.
ELECTRIC CIRCUIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540, 20, dated June 11, 1895.
Application filed March 24, 1890. 'Serial No. 345,056. (No modeli) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. ALE'XA DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Circuits, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawings.
Upon a telegraph line having a series of local stations thereon, the local battery of each station is a constant source of expense, and consequently its strength or tension is generally reduced to nearly the lowest point at which it will operate the receiving instrument or sounder, with comparatively no extra force to operate a second electro-magnet placed in circuit with the sounder. The above through a second electro-magnet so as to give to each of said electro-magnets, separately, the full force of the battery, and also to allow the sounder or receiving instrument to becut or switched in or out of the local circuit without interfering in any degree with the operation of the sounder. I attain this object by the mechanism and arrangement of circuits illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagramillustrating a local station upon a telegraph-line provided with a relay and a circuit -controlling "device, together with a sounder anda local battery, but forms no part of my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is also a diagram illustrating a local station upon a telegraph-line arranged in accordance with my invention, with a front and back. contact relay, a local battery, and sounder, together with an electric circuit-controlling apparatus.
In said drawings, L L represent an ordinary line wire upon which there is a station provided with a key K and a relay R. The armature of this relay is adapted to make front and back contacts. The front contact point F is connected through an ordinary sounder S, and local battery, L B, to the relay R in the ordinary manner. The back contact point B, is" connected through a second electro-magnet E, and the local battery, L B, to the'armature of relay R, said electro-magnet E being arranged to control the circuit of the ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME call bell C. If the main line is closed the 10- cal circuit will be closed through the sounder which will receive all the force of the battery. Now if the main line is opened, the local circuit will be broken through thesounder and closed through the electro-magnet E, and it "will then receive all the force of the battery until the line circuit is again closed.
In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a switch Dis placed in the sounder operating circuit,
by which the said sounder or receiving instrument can be switched in or out of the circuit, When the said switch D is closed the local-circuit is substantially the same as above described. .If the main line is closed the circuit will be closed through the sounder S which will receive all the force of the battery L B but if the main line is opened the local circuit will be broken through the sounder and closed through the electro-magnet E and it will receive all the force of the battery until the line circuit is again closed.
In the arrangement shown' in Fig. 1, the
call bell C is operated by the armature of the electro-magnet E closing the call bell circuit.
In the arrangement ,shown in Fig. 2, the call bell circuit is operated by an intermediate automatic oircuit controlling device of which a diagram elevation is shown, the same consisting essentially of a toothed wheel C W, a pawl Z and a pawl Y pivoted to a bell crank arm W, said pawl being adapted to The combination of a relay provided with front and back contacts, its armature, a battery, a sounder, and a switch in the sounder IOO circuit, with a signal controlling device having a toothed Wheel and pawls on a division upon the signal controlling device substanof the battery circuit and operated by the tialiy as described. 10 back contact of the relay; in which construc- In testimony whereof I affix my signature tion the sounder and signal controlling dein presence of two witnesses.
