PATENT it OTTO KLATTE, OF NEUWI'ED, GERMANY.
WIRE CHAIN-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,498, dated June 4, 1895. Application filed July 16, 1894. Serial No. 517,705- (l To model.)
To all whom it may cancer-n.-
Be it known that I, OTTO KLATTE,a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at N euwiedon-the-Rhine, Germany, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Wire Chain- Links, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention consists in making chain links according to which one or more length or lengths of wire or wire rope are continually wound into a hollow casing or shell having the form of the chain link to be produced and being split around the outside or formed open at such point to enable the wire or Wire rope to be wound into the said casing or shell. After the casing or shell has been properly filled by the wire or wire rope wound round the same the split or open edges are turned down and properly closed onto the said wire or wire rope and the link is ready for use. Such casing or shell may be made of one piece ofmetal or of several parts as may be found most convenient; and in order to make the present specification more easily intelligible reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in" which similar letters of reference denote similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 shows my improved links in crosssection at the left-hand side and in elevation at the right side. Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1, showing the link in horizontal section at the left-hand side and in plan View at the right. Figs. 3 and 4 are corresponding views of a modified form of the invention, accordingto which adivided casing or shellis employed, which is filled with wire rope or cable instead of the plain wire illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The shell I) is bent to the form of a chain link, the ends of the said shell where they meet to form the link closure overlapping at c 0, (Fig.2.) Thesaid shell is split around its outside horizontally, the edges lying some little distance apart, as shown-in dotted lines in Fig. 1 at d d. The wire a is now wound into the shell until the same is properly filled, whereupon the edges as shown at cl (1 are bent down to properly cover the wire and thus form the link. As shown in Fig. 1 the edges of the shell abut, but the same may also be made to overlap as shown at Fig. 3. In this latter figure and also in Fig. l the casing or shell is made in two parts which overlap at the points of juncture c c as will be seen at Fig. 4:. In these figures a wire cable is shown, which is wound into the shell in the same way as described with regard to Figs. 1 and 2. After the cable has been wound into the shell one edge of the latter is first bent down onto the said cable and then the opposite edge folded over the same so as to securely cover and retain in position the cable within.
. Links of the kind described may also be provided with studs or stays.
These links are particularly adapted for joining up the ends of weldless chains.
I claim as my invention 1. A chain link consisting of a casing or shell having the form of the link and having wound therein wire or cable, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2. A chain link'consisting of a casing or shell-bent to the form ofthe link and having its ends overlapping at the point of juncture, wire or cable wound within the said casing and turned down overlapping outward edges to the same in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
