.To @ZZ whom it may concern.- I Y Be it known that-I, FREDERICK HAsBRoUoK, of the city and county of'New York, in the useful Improvement in Labeling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates vto an improvement in labeling machines, the object being to provide a simple and effective machine for attaching Aa label to the curved or inclined surface of a is represented in the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a front-view of my machine, the table being partially broken away, the labelsupport being in its raised position as when attaching the label, and the gumming niechanism being in its withdrawn position. Fig.
2 is a similar view of the label-support in its lowered position and the gumming mechanism in its advanced position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the machine, the label-support being in its lowered position and the gumming mechanism in its withdrawn position. Fig. 4 is a side view of the machine, the table being in section, the labelfsupport and its operating mechanism being shown in full lines in its raised position and in dotted lines in its lowered position; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged View in section of a portion of the gumming-roller.
I have shown, and will describe my invention in connection with the labeling of bottles; but I would have it understood that it may be -used with equal facility for labeling packages of many different kinds and shapes.
The table for supporting the several parts is denoted by A and it is provided with suitable legs a. Supported by the table and extending lengthwise thereof, is a suitable drive shaft B which may be rotated in any manner, preferably by a suitable pulley and belt, as shown at b; or it may be driven by hand vor foot power, if so desired. To the table A is hinged a label support E which is adapted to swing up into position to force a label around the body of the bottle C for attachingit thereto. This swinging label support E is cut away, as shown at e, so that the sides of the support E may swing up on `A and engages a crank b on the shaft B.
This connecting rod F is provided with an velongated slot f, whereby the'la'bel support E is allowed to rest in its lowered or horizonytal position for about half of the revolution of the drive shaft B.
AAcross the cut away portion e of the label support E, I stretch elastic straps G (preferably three in number) which serve to support 4the labels and as the label support is raised,
wrap the labels around the bottleC. These elastic straps G are preferably rubber strips and they are clamped or secured to the label support at their opposite ends in any suitable manner.
The labels are denoted by H and they are held from sliding downwardly 'as the support E is raised by means of suitable projections I, I. These projections have a lateral adj ustment in suitable slots t', i', so that the projections I, I may support longer or shorter labels H and at the same time clear the sides of the bottle as the label support is raised.
The labels I-I are held against lateral movement while they are being gummed and also held against toppling over as the support E is raised by means of a suitable spring clamp J, which preferably consists of two arms j, j pivoted to lugs e2, e3 on the support E and conneeted at their outer ends bya rod j2. To the inner ends of the arms j, y", I secure spring rods jj* by means of suitable clamp nuts (i5. These rods are preferably of spring material and can be adj usted laterally to accommodate different sizes of bottles. This clamp is heid snugly against the top of the pile of labels by means of suitable springs j, j? which engage the arms j, j respectively. The clamp .I is released from the labels H as the label support E nearly reaches its raised position, by reason of the engagement of the rod i2 with the neck of the bottle C, as shown clearly in Fig. 4c.
Proceeding to describe the gumming mechanism, K designates a suitable gumming roller, which preferably consists of a perforated hollow cylinder, provided on its exterior with a gum applying cover 7c, preferably of felt. This gumming roller is preferably filled with an adhesive fluid through a suitable opening t which is provided with a stopper k2. This adhesive iiuid oozes out through the perforations in the cylinder and saturates the cover la of the roller. This roller is provided with a suitable yoke piece L, which connects with a suitable slide M, which has a sliding movement in a guide way N on the table A.
The roller K is-advanced and Withdrawn across the top of the labels on the label support E by means of a rocking lever O, which is pivoted in a suitable support P depending from the table A. One end o of the lever O projects through a slot in the table A and engages a pin m on the slide M, and the other end o engages a cam b2 on the drive shaft B. The groove in this cam is so arranged that, as the shaft B is rotated, the cam will advance and withdraw the roller over the top of the labels II when the label support is in its lowered or horizontal position and will hold the roller K in its-withdrawn position while the support E is being raised and lowered by reason of the crank and rod connection with the support.
In operation, a number of labels II are placed upon the label support E when it is in its lowered position and the machine is then started. The rst part of the rotation of the shaft B will advance and withdraw the gumming roller K over the top label. The further rotation of the shaft B will raise the label support and bring the top label into contact with the bottle C, where it will adhere. The still further rotation of the shaft B will allow the support E to swing down, and as it does so, the spring rods j3,j4 of the clamp Jwill engage the remaining labels and clamp them firmly to the support E during the remainder of its downward movement.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the struct ure herein set forth, but

In combination, a support for the article to be labeled, a swinging label support, means for raising and lowering the support, a gumming mechanism, and means for causing the gumming mechanism to traverse the label when the label support is in its lowered position, substantially as set forth.

In combination, a support for the article to be labeled, a label support, a drive shaft for swinging the label support toward and away from said articleand a gumming mech anism under the control of the drive shaft in position to be advanced and withdrawn across the label when the label support is in its lowered position, substantially as set forth.

In combination,a support for the article to be labeled, a swinging label support for attaching the label to the said article, means for swinging the label support toward and away from the article and adjustable proj ections on the label support for holding the labels from sliding downwardly when the label support is being raised and lowered, substan tially as set forth.
