RAILWAY CATTLE-G UARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,410, dated June 4, 1895. Application filed August 13, 1894. Serial No. 520.191- (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TAYLOR, of Winchester, in the county of Scott and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Railway Cattle-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings,which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved railway cattle guard; and the object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device for preventing the passage of cattle on tracks where they are intersected by fences.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view of my improved cattle-guard. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of a section of the same.'

A designates the rails, B the cross ties, and O the fence terminals on opposite sides of the railway.

Extended longitudinally with the tracks, both between them and outside of them, and secured to the cross ties are the guard sections D, each section being arranged in chain form and extending longitudinally with the track as shown. The sections are formed of series of links which inclose three sides of a square and which at their ends are projected vertically through the links to form obstructing points E. The bases of these points are formed with slight bends or kinks F in order that the adjacent links may secure a firm hold thereon, and thus prevent the points from being pushed downward when trod upon.

1n order that link loops may constitute the ends of the guard sections I form each section of two parts, the points of said parts being arranged on opposite ends of the links respectto position and as easily removed therefrom.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An improved cattle guard comprising a series of guard sections formed of links and supported by the road bed, each link being formed of a Wire having the straight end and the two straight and substantially parallel sides, said sides terminating in the upwardly turned points E, said pointsbeing positioned in the angles formed by the end and sides of the next adjacent link, substantially as shown and described- 2. An improved cattleguard comprising the chain sections arranged on the road bed, the sections being formed of the links, each link having the points at one end and the loop at the other end, each section formed in two parts having the link loops at their outer extremities and the points at their adjacent ends for the purpose stated, and the link G connecting said adjacent ends, substantially as shown and described.
