T0 at whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, EDGAR RAwsoN and ELDoRAD. LAKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Vermontville, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammocks; and We do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention has relation to a device adapted to be used as a hammock or reclining chair, the object in view being to provide a device of this character which shall be strong, durable, readily set up and folded together when desired and which shall occupy but little space when in its folded condition, and our invention' consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our device in position for use. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting-frame of the device in its partly folded position. Fig. 3 is a like, view showing the device in its completely-folded condition. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the supporting loops or rings on the hammock or canvas.

In carrying out our invention we provide a supporting frame 1 comprising the longer legs or uprights 2, the shorter legs3, pivotally connected at their upper ends to the legs 2 as at 4: and the diagonally arranged brace rods 5, pivotally connected together as at 6 and similarly connected at their lower ends to the Figs Fig.5 isa are provided with suitable loops or eyes 11, which may be the ordinary screw-eyes and through which pass the rods 8., Thus the brace-rods may be folded together into the position seen in Fig. 3, the screw-eyes riding upwardly on the rods 8 to permit such fold-. ing. When the frame is set up for use, the brace-rods are spread apart and the screweyes are then in a position at the lower ends of the rods 8 and prevent farther spreading apart of the brace-rods.

The legs 3 are adapted to occupy a position at an angle to the legs 2 and when in such position be securely held, and for this purpose we provide the legs 3 upon their outer faces with rods 13, secured thereto and forming guides for bails or loops 14E which embrace the legs 3 and are pivotally connected to or hung from the legs 2. When the frame is in its set up position as in Fig. 1, the bail will be at the upper end of the rods 13 to prevent farther spreading of the legs 3 and when the legs 3 are to be folded against the legs 2 as seen in Fig. 2 the bails ride along the guides to permit such folding.

14' indicates the hammock proper which is constructed with slightly bowed bars or rods 15 to which is suitably secured canvas or the like 16. The said hammock is adapted to receive a person and is also adapted to be hung or suspended from the frame 1 hereinabove described, and for this latter purpose we provide the said hammock upon each side with suspending ropes or cords 17, whose opposite ends are suitably secured to the bars 15, and each of saidropes carries a ring, loop or eye 18 which is adapted to hook over hooks 19 secured to the upper ends of the legs 2. The said loops or eyes 18 may be of any ordinary construction, though we prefer to employ the construction of eye seen in the drawings,the same being somewhat of a heart-shape, having the inwardly bent prongs 20. In applying the eyes to the ropes the latter pass over the portions 21 of the eye, then under the prongs and then over the portions 22 of the said eyes, whereby great frictional contact is attained between the eyes and the ropes which prevents slipping of the latter through the eyes. This is desirable when a person is reclining within the hammock to thus prevent accident to the person by the slipping of the rope and consequent tilting of the hammock.

When the hammock is suspended from the frame as in Fig. 1, the same should be balanced, and this can be attained by forcibly sliding the ropes through the eyes in one direction or the other until such balancing of the hammock is attained.

We provide the hammock with a foot rest 23 hung from one end of the hammock by cords or ropes 24.

It will be seen that we have provided a convenient and simple as well as strong device, well adapted for the purpose in View, and that the same may be readily set up or folded together whenever desired, and when folded will occupy but a small space.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Ina device of the character described, the supporting frame 1 comprising the legs 2 and 3 pivotally connected together, the bracerods pivotally connected at their lower ends to the legs 2, guide rods carried by the opposing faces of the legs 2, with which rods the upper ends of the brace-rods slidingly engage, guide rods carried by the legs 3 and bails or loops carried by the legs 2 and slidingly engaging said latter guide rods, for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the character described, the frame comprising the legs 2 and 3 pivotally connected together, the brace'rods pivotally connected at their lower ends to the legs 2, guide rods carried by the opposing faces of the legs 2,with which rods the upper ends of the brace-rods slidingly engage, guide rods carried by the legs 3 and bails carried by the legs 2 and slidingly engaging said latter guide rods, the whole constituting a foldable support for a hammock in combination with the hammock 14 arranged between the supporting legs 2 and detachably supported from the upper ends of said legs, said hammock having longitudinally arranged ropes or cords, eyes carried' by the latter and the legs 2 having hooks at their upper ends, with which the eyes on the ropes are adapted to engage, all as specified.
