SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,092, dated May 28, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NED FARISH, of Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented new and Improved Castrating-Forceps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved castrating tool in the form of forceps, and arranged to bruise, cauterize, constrict and cut off part ofthe spermatic cord, to greatly reduce the loss of blood and obviate the use of clamps, 8w.
Theinvention consists of a jaw formed with an offset, the inner face of which operates in conjunction with a cutting knife held in the other jaw.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as
will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation ofthe same.
The improved instrument is provided with the jaw arms A and B held on the pivot C and formed with the handles A and B respectively, under the control of the operator to move the jaw arms toward and from each other, to open and close the oppositely arranged jaws D and E respectively, held on the said arms. The bottom jaw D is formed on its upper face With aprojeetion D having the top serrations D extending transversely and terminating at their ends in the side flanges D extending above the serrations, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. The inner face D of the projection D forms a cutting face for the transversely extending knife F, secured by bolts or other means to the inner face of the jaw E. The cutting edge of the knife F extends a suitable distance below the bottom face of the jaw E, the depth corresponding approximately to the height of the projection D. On the under side of the jaw E is held, by a string G or other means, a medicated sponge I-I located directly opposite the serrations D In using this device the operator moves the handles A and B apart to open the jaws, as illustrated in the drawings. The jaws are then passed into the scrotum, after which the handles are closed to cause the knife F to cut the testicles, and at the same time the spermatic cord is cut, and the remaining portion is bruised and contracted by coming in be tween the serrations and the sponge and being crushed thereby to a considerable extent, above the cut off portion.
Now it will be seen that a powerful astringent or cauterizing substance, either in solution absorbed in the sponge, in powder form on the sponge, or in the cavities of the flutes or serrations D of the lower jaw, can be readily applied to the sperinatic cord at the time the latter is cut and bruised, so that there is no danger of hemorrhage, as the astringent or cauterizing substance applied prevents the hemorrhage. It will further be seen that with this tool the bruising, constricting, cau'teriz ing and cutting off of the spermatic cord are all done at one operation, and clamps and other devices heretofore necessary after the cutting operation was performed, are not necessary. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
