UMBRELLA.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 539,762, dated May 21, 1895. Application filed December 21,1393- Serial No. 9 3 (N model To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB BARNETT, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to umbrellas and it consists in stays having connection at one end with the umbrella ribs and at the other end to a ring rigidly fixed to the umbrella stick.

The object of my invention is to provide means for preventing an umbrella from turning inside out as often happens to umbrellas as ordinarily constructed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail indicating an umbrella as open and embodying my invention. Fig. 2 isa detail showing it partly or nearly closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, on an'enlarged scale, of a detail of the umbrella, a portion of my invention. Fig. 4is an edge view thereof, and Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 show modifications.

Referring by letter to the drawings A, designates the umbrella stick, A'arib connected to the stick in the usual manner and A is a stretcher extended from the usual runner a to the rib.

B designates the stay or anchor pivotally connected at one end to a ring b rigidly at tached to the stick A just below the ring to which the ribs are attached, and at the other 7 end the stay or anchor is pivotally connected to a lug b fastened to the rib near its outer end. It is to be understood that a stay or an-, chor may be extended from each rib or that there may be a less number of stays or anchors that are extended from alternate ribs. Between its ends the stay or anchor has an open or longitudinally slotted portion 6 through which opening or slot the stretcher extends. This opening or slot must be sufficiently long to allow for the free movement of the stretcher, during the opening or closing of the umbrella. I prefer, however, that when the umbrella is open the stretcher shall abut against the upper end wall of the opening or slotand I may provide the stretcher with a projection or pin a, adapted to bear upon the upper side of the slotted portion. This proj ection or pin will serve as a means to prevent the stay or anchor from moving upward on the stretcher and thus serve as an additional anand 4.

The stays or anchors above described consist of metal, but I may employfiexiblecords;

and a cord 0 is, at its centralportion, laced through two of these holes, extended down between the stick and band and the ends attached to adjacent ribs. 'As a means for attaching the cords to the ribs I may employ rings 0 surrounding the rib and sewed to the umbrella cover. are attached may be slightly larger in diameter than thering b, so that said ring I) and the stays or anchors will not interfere with the close folding of the umbrella.

Referring to the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the stretcher A is provided with a longitudinal central slot at through which the stay or anchor O of flexible material passes.

In Figs. 9 and 10 the brace A is provided with a lateralloop slot d and the stay or anchor is provided with a metal hook portion d which will engage'with the loop d when the umbrella is opened.

By attaching the inner ends of the stays or anchor to a ring rigidly secured to the stick the stays or anchors will not double up and extend out of the umbrella when closed as would be the case were cords used and attached at one endto the runner c.

Having described my invention, what I claim is w 1. In an umbrella or the like; the combination of a rib, a stretcher therefor, a projection upon said stretcher, a stay pivoted at one end near the extremity of the rib and at the other end upon the umbrella stick, and a shoulder upon said stay adapted to be engaged by the projection upon the stretcher, to prevent the rib turning backwardly; substantially as de scribed.
