Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. LYTLE, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
BUILDING COMPOUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,694, dated May 21, 1895.
Application filed September 17, 1894.
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LYTLE, of Syracuse,.in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in compositions or compounds of matter to be used for various purposes in architecture and building, as for wallplaster, for making blocks or slabs for tiling, mantel-pieces, hearths, floors, wainscoting, interior or exterior ornaments and many other kinds of work analogous thereto, for making articles or things with a plane concave or convex face with or without any ornamental design, pattern, or configuration in relief or in intaglio, or both, or partly of each, and whether the articles or things so made therefrom are designed to be used in their natural condition or it is desired to expose them to the action of heat, as for firing or glazing, or for any other purpose or object, or which may remain of their natural colors, or may be 001- ored to any shade or shades While being man ufactured, or painted with any desired color or colors after they are made, of which the following is a specification.
My composition consists of the following ingredients combined in substantially the proportions stated, viz: white lead, twenty-five pounds; lime, unslakod, one hundred pounds; sand, four hundred and fifty pounds; manganese, five pounds; gypsum, ground, twenty d pounds; ground marble, twenty pounds; soda ash, ten pounds; ground iron ore, fifty pounds. These are mixed and compounded in any ordinary manner, adding sufficient water to reduce the compound to the desired consistency.
This compound constitutes my base, which can be molded or otherwise formed, shaped or pressed to any form desired, either with or without dies to produce ornamental effects, either in the natural color, or colored to any Serial No. 523,230. (No Specimens.)
shade or shades desired by the addition of coloring matter to the compound while being mixed, or with a body of natural color and an outer coating colored and applied to said body to constitute the outer face or portion, or part or parts which are exposed to view; or said body may be painted or otherwise coated with any coloring or glazing matter in any ordinary manner, and said colors and shades fixed by firing or burning in any ordinary manner.
This compound can also be applied in any ordinary manner to wood, stone or iron work as an outer coating, either in its natural condition or colored to any shade or shades desired.v
To produce a wall-plaster, I add to the above compound part or all of the following ingredients in substantially the proportions stated, viz: animal glue, thirty pounds; calcined gypsum, (plaster of paris,) two hundred pounds; hair, 3 pounds; and mix, commingle or compound the ingredients in any ordinary manner. If it is desired to have it set quicker, the retarding agent, the glue, is omitted, either wholly or a less quantity is used, according to the speed of setting desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The herein described composition of matter consisting of white-lead; lime; sand; manganese; gypsum; ground marble; soda ash; iron ore, and water in substantially the proportions specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of September, 1894.
GEORGE W. LYTLE.
In presence of- O. W. SMITH, HOWARD P. DENISON.
