THOMAS BAILEY, or NEW YORK, N.-Y.
FIREPROIOF PARTITION, CEILING, WALL, aw.
SPECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Batent No. 539,214, dated May 14, 1895. Application filed June 29, 1894- Serial No. 516 ,038. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LTHOMAS'BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful In provements in Fireproof Partitions, Ceilings, Walls, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of fire proof partitions, walls, &c., consisting essentially of dovetail corrugated metallic sheets such as represented in my patent of September 13, 1887, No. 369,630, and whereof I claim to be the original inventor, and means of supporting and securing said plates in position, and the invention which I now claim consists in further improvements in the means of supporting and securin g said plates in position, as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevat1on of a partition and section of the floor-beams above, with the rib and grooves of the corrugated sheets arranged upright as I now propose, in which condition the sheets afford substantial support for the floors above; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the partition of Fig. 1, on theline y y. In my patent of September 30, 1887, No. 369,680, dovetail ribbed and grooved metallic sheets are represented with metallic studs or joists interwoven with the sheets suitably perforated therefor to support the sheets, as the skeleton base for the plastic walls, ceilings, or other structural parts composed of plastic material. In my Patent No. 504,858, dated September 12, 1893, like corrugated sheets are represented with bars attached to the surfaces of the sheets.-
In my present invention I employ like doveatail corrugated metal sheets a, for the main portions of the partitions or walls to hold the plaster when it is used, said plates being placed with the ribs and grooves upright, and to support the ends and edges of the sheets I now employ channel bars, as c and d, suit-' ably placed on the upper and lower floor beams.
respectively, to receive and support the edges of the partitions at top and bottom, with intermediate channel bars b to hold the meeting edges of the sheets when the sheets are not wide enough to reach from floor to ceiling. Bars 0 and d, are preferably made with flanges f perforated for nailing to facilitate securing them in position after the sheets and said bars 0 and d, have been put together and the whole so set in position as shown at g, where the bars f are nailed to the upper floor beams h. The door frames and the frames of other like openings as windows, will consist of upright channel bars as b, with suitable cross bars 17*, and where the edges of the ribbed and grooved sheets meet two channel bars will be used, said bars placed back to back, or double channel bars as H shaped bars may be used, but it will generally be more convenient in assembling the parts to use separate channel bars as represented in the drawings.
Instead of placing the corrugated sheets with the ribs and grooves horizontally as they have been heretofore arranged, I now take advantage of the great strength of such plates to support weight where substantial support of upper floors is required, and thus place them with the ribs and grooves upright to utilize the power of such sheets when so placed to support weight together with said intermediate channel bars b to hold the meeting edges of the sheets, of which two or more tiers are required owing to the limit in the width of practicable sheets, said intermediate bars 19 being suitably secured at the ends to upright bars bb. The sheets are to be generally covered with plaster 2', but may be used without.
Base boards as j, may be nailed to wood fillers is, inserted lengthwise in grooves of the plates and secured therein by the dovetail shaped sheets.
I do not broadly claim herein dovetail cor-.
rugated ribbed and grooved sheets in the construction of partitions, ceilings or the like, for they are represented in the before mentioned prior patents granted to me; neither do I claim broadly the use of channel bars for supporting metallic sheets in such structures, for they are represented in connection with so-called lathing blocks composed of doubled plain sheets of metal in the British Patent No. 6,517 of 1889. I
I claim 1. The combination in a fire proof partition or wall, of the dovetail ribbed and grooved h eets arran ged with the ribs and grooves upthe edges of the snperim posed sheets substantialiy as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presenoe of two witnesses, this 1st day of June, [5
THOMAS BAILEY. Witnesses:
