Description

B. B. POWZER.
. FIREPLACE. I
No. 538,959 Patented May 7, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT E. FOWZER, OF BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIREPLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,959, dated May 7, 1895.
Application filed August 17, 1894- Serial No. 520,585. (No model.)
Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention,
- which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fire-places of that class or description known as hollow back fire places, in which air from the exterior of the building is introduced into said hollow back and heated by radiation, and then carried to the room in which the fire-place is located'or to rooms adjoining or above the same.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of fire place of the above description which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efliciency in operation.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a front View of a fireplace constructedin accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the side wall. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section showing the draftregulator. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the draft-regulator.
I able material.
In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates an ordinary chimney, and2 the flue for carrying off the products of combustion.
The numeral 3 designates the hollow back of the fire-place comprising the vertical walls 4, 4, inclined forwardly at theirupper ends, 5 the bottom and 6 the top. These walls may be made of tile, fire-brick, metal or other suit- The bottom 2, at the center is provided with a cold air flue 7, leading to the exterior of the building, and at its-top is provided with pipes 8, leading'therefrom to the room in which the fire-place is located. It is also provided with a hot air flue 9, by which the hot air may be conducted to an adjoining room or to the floor above.
The numeral 10 designates hollow side walls which may be made of the same material as the back, and they are formed at top and bottom with hot and cold air openings, respectively.
On top of the hollow back Wall is a draft regulator, consisting of a horizontally movable rectangular plate 12, having slots for the passage of the hot air pipes 8, and at its front edge is provided with a lug 13, with which a poker or other instrument may be engaged for moving the plate back and forth. When this plate is pulled out the throat of the fireplace or flue is contracted whereby the draft is decreased and when pushed in it is enlarged and the draft increased.
The numeral 12 designates the grate, which may be arranged to burn coal, gas or any other fuel found desirable.
The operation will be readily understood. When a fire is made in the grate, the air in the hollow back will be heated and escape into the room through pipes 8, orinto other. rooms through fine 9, said pipes and flue being provided with suitable dampers. Fresh cold air will enter the hollow back through flue 7, and thus a constant circulation will be kept up of heated air from the heatingpipes 8. The hollow sides will also be heated causing a circulation therethrough, the .cold air entering the bottom openings and escaping through the top ones.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a fire place, the combination with the hollow back, having a cold air opening at the bottom, the pipes 8 leading to the room in which the fire place is located, and-the hot air flue 9 leading to an adjoining room,'of the horizontally movable draft regulator having slots for the passage of the pipes 8, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. FOWZER.
