E. H. HIRSH. I "FERBULE FOR UMBRELLA SHEATHS.
No. 538,872. Patented May 7, 1895.
7 NITED STATES rrrc PATENT FERRU LE FOR UMBRELLA-SHEATHS.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,872, dated May '7, 1895.
Application filed November 26, 1894. Serial No. 530,012- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD HAMPTON HIRSH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ferrules for Umbrella-Sheaths, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in a ferrule for a-sheath or incasement of an umbrella adapted to present the appearance of a walking stick, said ferrule being constructed of parts as will hereinafter be pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a ferrule'for an umbrella-sheath embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the ferrule and a portion of the sheath on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a section on line on m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the detached portion on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section, showing the manner of attaching the sheath to the ferrule thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
. which is generally of less diameter than said shell, and is formed with a knurl F on the,
other end, and with a circumferential groove or neck G between said knurl and the adjacent edge of the shell, said collar having a slot H which extends in the direction of the length of the ferrule, and on its inner wall the shoulder J, the latter being of less diameter than said ferrule, it being noticed that a chamber exists in the shell, below said shoulder J, so that only said shoulder comes in contact with the side of the stick, and firmly holds the same in the ferrule, and avoids scratching of said stick.
K designates a sheath of leather or other suitable pliable material, which is of the form of an incasement connected at one end with the collar F, said incasement being adapted to receive anumbrella within the same, while the end of the stick passes through said collar into the ferrule, and is seated on the base of the chamber D in the plug of said ferrule.
narrow end of the sheath is around said collar, as shown in Fig. 5. The portion of the sheath surrounding the neck Gris now secured in the latter, either by the piece G of thread or wire wound around said portion, thus forcing the latter into said neck, or by stitches passed throughsaid portion and neck, the sheath thus being firmly connected with the collar and consequently with the ferrule, it being prevented from disconnection owing to its fastening in the neck. The sheath is now turned inside out, whereby said fastening is concealed, and the bend and two thicknesses A of the sheath occupy the groove and are held tightly against the knurl F, see Fig. 2, and the sheath is in'condition to receive the umbrella as in Fig. 1, it being noticed that the shoulder J on the inner wall of the collar embraces part of the stick of the umbrella,
thus holding and steadying the same within.
there is no bulging of the sheath at said place,
and the ferrule and sheath present a flush joint between them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ferrule for an umbrella sheath comprising a shell, and a collar attached to the outer end of said shell, said collar being provided with a slot for the seam of the sheath, said parts being combined substantially as described. 2. A ferrule for an umbrella sheath, comprising a shell, and a collar at the outer end of said shell, said collar having a neck on its exterior, and a shoulder on its interior, and said shell having a chamber therein below said shoulder, substantially as described.
