SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,861, dated May '7, 1895.

Be it known that I, ADoLPH-BOEHMEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprinklers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a rotary sprinkler head, which is provided with a tapering discharge opening so that a greater volume of water will be thrown from its upper end, and less water directly beneath it.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of my improved sprinkler-head mounted upon the end of a section of pipe. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sprinkler-head. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the rotary portion ofthe sprinkler-head. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on dotted line a, Fig. 2.
In the construction of sprinkler heads in which the discharge opening is not tapering from above downward it has been found that the greater bulk of water is deposited near the sprinkler, and gradually grows less as the distance is increased, and it is also noticeable that the larger the stream of water relatively to a given size under the same press- 30A ure the greater area it will cover.
My invention is intended to distribute the water more uniformly over a greater area.
My improved sprinkler head consists of a socket portion 1, internally screw threaded, and having a central discharge opening terminating in a tubular extension 2. From the socket extends a curved arm 3, having its overhanging end 4, directly over the tubular extension 2, and recessed on its under face. The rotary portion of the head consists of a tubular section 5, its lower end placed over the tubular extension 2, ofthe socket, and itsV upper end being rounded is received in the recess of the overhanging end 4, in a manner.

From the tubular portion 5, directly opposite the discharge opening extends a counterbalance weight 7. The screw threaded socket receives a pipe 8 through which water is conveyed to the sprinkler head, and the force of the water against the'inclined side 9 of the water discharge will cause the movable portion of the head to rotate and its velocity will depend upon the water pressure.y
As the water discharge-bpening is largest at its upper portion a greater stream of water will tind its wayout, and as the opening diminishes less water will be discharged, and by discharging this graduated stream of water, the larger stream will reach to a greater distance and has a greater area to cover, and the size of the discharge opening near the center ot' rotation will dischargeY the same amount of water in proportion to the extent of surface it covers as the larger opening.
