EMANUEL A. RICH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOBACCO IVIOISTENING, PERFURNIING, OR FLAVORING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,845, dated May 7, 1895.
A Application filed October 5, 1893. Serial Ilo. 487,252. (No model.)
To all whom t may concer-n:
Be it known that I, EMANUEI. A. RICH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco Moistening, Perfuming, and Flavoring Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and-exact specification.
My invention relates to the means employed for imparting moisture to cigars. tobacco,'and the like, and its object is to provide a device of suitable construction for this purpose, said device being equally well adapted for use as a perfumer or flavorer, and capable of application in the form of a Watch charm, or other article of bijouterie. l
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention in a form representing a cigar, and this particular shape I` find most suitable when the device is intended to exhale moisture, &c., within a box of cigars, but I do not by any means limit my invention to this particular design and use, being Well aware that it may be applied in conjunction with a great variety of designs, and be made to serve various uses.
In the drawings accompanying this specilication, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in the form of a cigar. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is aside elevation of a modified form of moistening-roll.
A indicates the casing of Athe Vmoistener, being here represented in the shape of a cigar. Said casing is provided With perforations a, and a cap b. Within said casing A, near either end thereof, is adjusted a disk c of metal or other suitable material having inner facings of blotting paper, or other absorbent, c', and having a central opening d, said opening d receiving the ends of a Wire rod e, or its equivalent. A roll or pad f of blotting paper or other suitable absorbent material is formed around rod e. VSaid pad being saturated and adj usted Within the casin g as stated, the moisture emanating therefrom will pass through the perforations a., the device thus serving its purpose as a moistener.
In the event of a too full saturation of the pad f, and the objection of liquid finding its way through the perforations a-to the detriment of the goods'with which the casing A is in contact-I have provided an inner casing g partially'inclosing the pad f. Said casing g may be of any suitable shape, and is here shown cylindrical in form, having a longitudinal slot h formed therein, said slot having a Width of about one fourth the circumference of said casing, `and in length extending to Within a short distance of each end of said casing.
The casing q is provided at either end with a perforation to receive the rod c upon which said casing is journaled. The perforations t' aresituate eccentrically in a position to enable said casing g to be suspended with its s lot 7L uppermost, irrespective of the circumferential, bearing Yof the casing A. By this means the casing g becomes a receiver for any overflow from the moisture pad or roll, and the exhalation is carried off through the sloth.
Preparatory to the useof the moistener, the n cap b is removed from the casing A, and the inner contents of said casing withdrawn therefrom by means of the handlejat one end of rod e. The roll or padf is then saturated by immersion in Water, or any desired perfume or flavoring liquid, and said parts are returned to the casing A. The cap b being replaced, the device is then ready for use. When said casing is in the shape of a cigar, and the device intended for moistening cigars, the same may be laid among such cigars, and it will occupy only so much space in the box as one of the cigars, packing readily therewith.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 I'have illustrated a means whereby the roll or pad f is rendered more readily capable of a full absorption of moisture, said roll being provided for this purpose with a spiral groove lo, preferably V-shaped, cut through the several thicknesses of blotting orother absorbent material. Instead of a groove I may out notches around the roll. Said groove, o`r notches, provide an extended edge surface, which lends itself more freely to saturation than the front surface.
I may dispense with the use of the inner casing g, particularly When the grooved (or notched) roll is used, as there is not likely to be any drainage from this form of roll.
Y An important advantage of. the present in- ICO vention is that it comprises a portable moistener; that is to say, one that can be placed in any box or other receptacle for cigars, rbc., without the necessity of changing the construction of such box; and anothervaluable feature lies in the factthat the easing can be made to conform to the shape of a cigar, so that it can be packed in a box of cigars, taking the place of one of the cigars, and without any danger of its injuring the surrounding cigars by contact therewith.
Having now described my invention, I dcolare that what I claim is l. A portable inoistener, perfurner, or llavorer, consisting of an outer perforated casing, an inner slotted casing, an absorbent roll or pad within said inner casing, and means for pivotally suspending said roll and inner easing within said outer casing, substantially as set forth.
2. A portable inoistener, pertunier or tlai vorer, consisting of a perforated casing, supports within said casing, near each end thereof, a connection between said supports and an absorbent roll or pad mounted upon said connection, substantially as set forth.
A portable inoistener, perfumer or t1a vorer, consisting of a perforated casing ofsubstantially cigar shape, a cap therefor, a disk near either end within said casing, a rod connecting said disks, a substantially cylindrical slotted casing journaled upon said rod, and an absorbent roll or pad mounted upon said rod within said inner casing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claiin the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of September, 1893.
I?. A. RICH.
