SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,781, dated May 7, 1895. i Application filed August 16, 1894. Serial No. 520,489. (No model.)
Y cation.
The object of my improvement is to provide a street-sweeper adapted more particularly for removingy all dirt and rubbish from gutters and conveying the same toward the center of the street.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a top view of a street-sweeper constructed according to my invention, a portion ot' the platform being broken away and one end of the broom being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken at the plane of the line no cc, Fig. 1.
a, designates a platform whose rear end is supported upon brackets, bb', loosely mounted on a rotary axle, c, of a pair of wheels, d, d.
The front end of the platform is supported upon a fifth Wheel, e, of ordinary construction, and which is secured upon an axle, e', of a pair of wheels, e2, e3.
f, is a broom arranged diagonally of the machine and having its body portion, f, rigidly secured upon a shaft, f2. This shaft extends beyond one of the ends of the broom and this Vprojecting portion is journaled in a swinging frame g, loosely mounted upon the axle, c. The free end of the frame, g, is raised or lowered by means of a link, g', pivotally connected thereto, and to a bellcrank lever, g2, fulcrumed in a bracket, g3.
g4, is a resilient detent adapted to hold the broom in an elevated position when not in use.
Motion is imparted to the broom by means of a sprocket chain, h, passing around ay wheel, h', secured to the shaft, f2, and around a drive wheel, h2, secured on a shaft, h3.V The latter is journaled in the frame, g, and is provided with a gear wheel, h4, to engage with a gear wheel, h5, loosely mounted upon the axle, c, and prevented from lateral movement thereon by a collar, c', secured to the said axle. One side of the gear wheel, h5, is
provided with clutch teeth, h6, to engage with corresponding teeth of a clutch collar, k7, fitted to slide on a spline secured to the axle, c.
o, is a lever secured to a rock-shaft, i', which is mounted in standards, 2, 3. The
lever, i, has a bifurcated end to engage in an annular groove, hs, formed in the collar, hl.
The rock-shaft-,rlQis provided with a lever, i4, within reach of the drivers seat, i5, to disconnect the broom from the axle when desired. -Y
6, is a resilient detent to hold the clutch parts disconnected against the action of a coil spring, h", when the broom is not in use.
The outer end of the body portion of the broom is convex in form, and bristles are arranged to radiate therefrom.
j, is a disk tted to slide on a projecting portion of the shaft, and be forced inwardly thereon by a nut, j.` The periphery of this disk is preferably of conical form, to bear against the flaring surface of the end portion of the broom and compress the bristles together to form a strong and compact annular rim projecting radially beyond the main portion of the broom and adapted to reach and remove dirt in holes and orevices of the gutter that would be passed over by brooms of ordinary construction.
By my construction, the end portion of the broom is stiffened and rendered capable of exerting considerable pressure against the surfaces to be cleaned, and in addition thereto is capable of yielding and adapting itself to irregularities in forms of curbstones and gutters to reach and effectually clean the corners of the latter and convey the sweepings toward the center of the street.
I have indicated the junction of a gutter and curbstone being cleaned by my improved sweeper, byl a dotted line, m, in Fig. 1.
In a broom supported at one end, the combination of a shaft, a body portion containing bristles secured thereon and having its free end provided withbristles flaring out- Wardly and beyond the termination thereof,
stiffen the annular projecting rim of bristles, and a nut adapted to adjust and secure the disk upon the shaft substantially as described.
