Be it known that I, JOSEPH HELLIWELL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Keig.h.ley,i'n the county of York, England, have invented certain Improvementsin Apparatus for Carving Wood and other Suitable Mate rials,'(for which a patent has been granted to me in England, No.
14,681, dated August .15, 1892; in France, No.
231,583, dated July 18, '1893, and in Belgium, No. 105,586, dated July 18, 1893,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the construction of'an apparatus in such a manner that, while preserving the advantages of machines constructed as hitherto for the purpose of carving, the mechanism for controlling the cutters, both as regards rotation and the operation of same to and from the surface to be out, is simplified, acts direct, less costly, and the complete apparatus occupies little floor space. v
In describing my invention in detail reference is made to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of a machine suitable for carving wood and the like constructed in accordance with my method of operating the cutting-tools. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same with the top plate removed. 1 Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite side of the machine to that shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the machine with the top plate removed. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail, drawn to a larger scale, of one of the cutterspindles.
Upon a frame A. is mounted a bed plate B. arranged to reciprocate (in the direction of the double arrow) upon the bed A. of gauntree A. along with the table 0. mounted on the said bed plate. The table 0. is operated at intervals by the screw S. in the longitudinal direction thereof. 7 To the standard D. is secured a cross plate E. havinga number of journals formed therein for the reception of the. hollow spindles F. driven by belts from the pulley G. operated by a belt on one of the pulleys P.
Supported by uprights U. attached to the table 0. is a plate J. to which is secured a negative relief pattern H. of the design to be carved on the Wood or the like secured tothe table 0. the point of each spindle F. being held in contact with the negative design H. in the manner as hereinafter described.
The traveling motion to .the table 0. may be obtained in the following. manner: Upon the rotating shaft K. is secured a Worm L. gearing with worm Wheel L. keyed upon a vertical spindle having a cam plate M. attached to the top of same and arranged with a groove M. cut in the circumference, with which engages a stud secured to one arm of lever N. to the other arm of which is attached a rod Q. coupled to the lever P. havingapawl Q. mounted thereto and engaging with wheel Q secured on shaft R. by a feather key. Upon the said shaft is a bevel wheel T. gearing with bevel wheel T. secured on screw S.
which is geared with a nut attached to the table 0. so that by the rotation of the cam plate M. the levers N. and P. are operated,
and an intermittent rotary motion transmitted to the shaft R. and screw S. by which the table 0. is caused to slide on the bed plate B.
- The reciprocating motion to the bed plate B. and table C. in the direction of the double arrow, is accomplished by means of a cam groove cuton the under side of the cam plate M. A stud at one end of lever U. mounted on a fulcrum at U engages in the said groove, the opposite end of the lever being coupled by a rod V. to the under side of the bed plate B. which is thereby operated in a transverse direction upon bed A. of gauntree A. in accordance with the groove on the under side of the cam plate M.
In each hollow spindle F. is mounted a con ter spindle F. driven by the hollow spindle F. in such a manner that it is free to slide therein. The upper portion of each center spindle F. above the collar W. maybe formed square or of any suitable section, and passes through a hole of corresponding section in cap F terminating at the top with a pointed end.
The opposite end of each center spindle F. is prepared for the reception of a cutting tool Y. and upon each center spindle is secured a collar W. between which and the bottom of the hollow spindle F. is placed a compressed spiral spring S. for keeping the pointed end of center spindle in contact with the negative pattern II. of the design to be carved on the wood or the like secured to table 0.
By the pointed end of each spindle F. being in contact with the negative design II. secured to the plate J. and the design being supported by posts U from table 0 and therefore moving over the ends of each spindle, in a transverse and longitudinal direction, the respective center spindles F. slide in the direction of their axis in accordance with the surface of the design H. on plate J. thereby causing the center spindles F. and cutting tools Y. attached thereto to protrude and cut away the wood or the like fixed on the table 0. or retreat therefrom in accordance with the configuration of the said design.
In order that the cutting tools Y. may be in contact with the surface to be cut during the traverse of the tools across the wood or other material in one direction only, I cause plate J. and design H. secured thereto to be raised during the return stroke of table 0. This is accomplished by securing to rotating shaft K. a worm Z. gearing into worm wheel 1 secured on shaft 2 having a universal coupling 3 of ordinary construction placed in any convenient position on said shaft, which is prepared with a long slotted keyway at 4, the shaft sliding through bevel wheel 5 fitted with a feather key and supported by bracket 6 secured to table 0. The bevel wheel 5 gears with wheel 7 and operates through wheels 8 the two shafts 9 mounted on uprights U. and respectively provided with cams 10 which on rotating raise and lower said plate J. on vertical pins J. as required.
What I claim is 1. A wood working machine com prising the movable table, the pattern support above said table and carried thereby, the intermediate rigid bar, the series of hollow spindles journaled in said bar, the inner spindles journaled in said hollow spindles and movable vertically therein, said inner spindles having each a collar and a squared portion above the collar, the springs bearing against the collars,
and the caps for the hollow spindles having a square opening for the upper portion of the spindle, and means for rotating the spindles substantially as described.
2. The combination of rotating worm L. worm wheel L. cam plate M. and lever U. with table substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The rotating cam M. having a groove M. cut in the circumference combined with screw S. and table 0. by operative intermediary connections substantially in the manner and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
4. The rotating cam M. combined with table 0. and bed plate B. by screw S. and rod V. and intermediary connections by which a compound reciprocating motion is imparted to the table for the purpose as hereinbefore set forth.
5. A wood working machine comprising the movable table, the pattern support carried thereby, the intermediate stationary spindle support carrying a series of rotating tool holding spindles, the upper ends of said spindles being held normally with their upper ends in contact with the pattern, and means for automatically raising and lowering the pattern support and pattern substantially as described.
6. In combination, the tools, the pattern, the longitudinally reciprocating table (3, the laterally reciprocating table B carrying the same, the cam M, the lever U operated thereby for moving the table B, the screw S, the transverse shatt-R geared thereto and means for operating the-shaft R comprising the pawl and ratchet mechanism with connections extending to the cam M, substantially as described.
