SAFETY-PAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,625, dated April 30, 1895. Application filed March 9. 1894. Serial No. 503,002. (No specimens.)

Be it known that I, JUDAH ToURo ROBERT- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Paper; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improvements in what has been termed protective, safety or distinctive paper designed to be used for checks, notes, bonds or other securities.

The object of the invention is to produce a paper printed, or otherwise impressed,with various colors, which, when written upon, the writing cannot be erased or altered without removing one or more of the colors and which removed color or colors cannot be replaced to conform to the original. To accomplish this object I print, or otherwise impress, upon the paper on different parts of its surface one or more deleble and one or more fast colors. These are either printed with strict lines of registry or the deleble and fast colors slightly blending or lapped as in chromatic printing. Should writing upon the paper so prepared be erased, such, for instance, as in raising a check, it would be almost if not impossible to match the lines of the work in endeavoring to restore the tint originally used, more particularly where the lines are continuous in different colors.

The invention above referred to will be fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the specification and claims, reference being had to the drawing, in which the fast and deleble colors are simply illustrated as printed alternately.

' In manufacturing my improved paper I print, or otherwise impress, upon the same a fast and a deleble color either arranged alternately, as shown in the drawing, or upon different portions of said paper, the letter A representing the fast color, the letter B the deleble color. These fast and deleble colors are ordinarily printed or impressed upon the paper, so that the lines register strictly, but may be printed to slightly overlap or blend. Should an attempt be made to remove or alt-er any writing upon the paper so prepared, the deleble color would be removed at such' places upon said paper where there was a deleble color. To restore this color with the exact tint, and to match the lines between said deleble and fast colors, could not be done'in such a manner as to deceive, especially where the lines are continuous for deleble and fast colors in juxtaposition. v

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is` l. A paper or other article printed, impressed or colored on different parts of its surface with one or more fast and one or more deleble colors, forming continuous regular or irregular lines, at the dividing lines of the fast and deleble colors, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.

2. A paper or other article printed or otherwise overlaid on its surface with one or more deleble and one or more fast inks forming specic dividing lines between the fast and deleble inks on said surface, substantially as shown and described.
