CORN-PLANTER ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 537,851 dated April 23, 1895 Application filed August 4, 1894.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HOWARD PETEFISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arcadia, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention saves time and labor in hauling and adjusting the marker usually attached to a corn-planter for the purpose of making a mark across the field, by which the driveris enabled to guide the planter, so that the corn-rows shall be equally distant from each other. I attain this result by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a perspective View of the machine.

A, is an arched rod, extending from cornbox B, to corn-box C,'said rod being of metal or other hard substance, and the arch being high enough to be above the lines, or reins by which the driver guides the team, and being in diameter one third to one half (t) of one inch. D, isa ring on said rod A, of metal or other hard substance and being in diameter, one and one half (1%) inches, and E, is a large cord or small rope, one end of which is attached to said ring D, the other end being attached to the marker F, which is on a rod, F one end of which is attached to the center of the rear of the corn planter, by a swivel, and extends at right angles, either to the right, or left of the corn planter when in aotion-crossing and recrossing the fieldthe other end having a shoe, or runner, which makes the mark already described. Said marker F. and large cord or small rope E, and ring D, are not my inventionexcept as to the point or place of fastening said ring D,-it having heretofore been fastoned or attached to the whiffietree.

G, G, are two levers for raising the Serial No. 519,519. (No modelt) marker F, when the corn-planter is moving, and the marker not in action; as in turning to recross the field; and in going to, and returningfrom the field; or in passing over obstacles; these levers being operated by the driver with his feet, by pressing downward.

H, H, are hooks or stays to hold the levers down.

I am aware that prior to my invention, an arc-shaped or curved metal bar has been in use on corn planters, by which in connection with a ring traversing said bar, attached to a rope, which was also attached to the marker, the marker could be transferred from one side of the planter to the other; and that Letters Patent were issued to one Daniel G. Gilliland November 23, 1886, numbered 353,215, for such an invention; but I am not aware, that the arched rod A, extending from corn box to corn-box (instead of being placed on an oscillating whiftletree) has ever been used in connection with levers,..handled or operated with the feet for raising the marker, without the driver having to dismount from his seat, as described in my invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure Letters Patent for, is-

The combination in a corn-row marker, of the rod F, pivoted to the rear cross-beam, the guide rope E., extending to ring D., sliding on the arched rod A. incombination with the pivoted levers G. G. and stays H. H.,whereby the rod F, may be raised by the levers to within reach of the operator, for transferring the rod from side to side of the frame, and for locking the same when not in operation substantially as shown and described.
