0. A. PPLUGER. ELECTRIC ARC LAMP.
No. 537,617. Patented Apr. 16, 1895.
ATTUHNET t UNllTE STATES PATENT anion.
CHARLES AEPFLUGER, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE STANDARD ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRIC-ARC LAMP.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,617, dated April 16,1895.
Application filed July 2, 1894;. Serial No. 516,325. (E model.)
To all whom it may concern.- to the ends of the arms D D. Said arms are Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. PFLUGER, pivoted to the rods D D which are fastened acitizen of the United States, residing at Chito the base A ,but insulated therefrom. The
cago, in the county of Cook and State of Illiarms C C are also preferablyinsulated from 55 nois, have invented certain new and useful the cap A and strips A. My invention relates to are lamps and has The lower carbon Eis attached to the bent for its object to produce an improved lamp tube or rod E, the ends of which pass through 60 to of which the following is a description, refec holes in the base A Said rod is insulated ence being had to the accompanying drawfrom the base A". The series coil B strips A A which are connected together at is connected to binding post B by wire B 70 each end by the caps or cylindrical portions and with the carbon A by wire B. The wire A A and are free to move through a hole in B connects rod E with binding post B The the base A A rod A on the end of the cap wires B B connect the shunt coil B with A passes through a hole in the top plate A the wires B and B so as to guide the carbon holder consisting of It is evident that these several parts may 75 strips A A and caps A A and keep itin pobe varied in form, construction and arrangesition. plate A. The use and operation of myinvention are 80 g 0 A" is a cap on the carbon A to which the as follows: The carbonA maybe inserted beelectrical connection is made. Pivoted to tween the strips A at the lower end by liftthis standard'is the lever B which is coning the sleeve C and spreading apart the nected to the cores of the series coil B and points C C or said carbon may be slipped shunt coil B Said lever engages one of the in between the plates A A when the carbon 85 5 pins A on the strip A, and is provided with holder is raised to its highest position; or it an arm B which engages the other pin A might be inserted at the top of the carbon The cap A on the end of the strips A is holder. In a lamp in which the carbon is inprovided with the projecting pieces C C to serted at the top or bottom of the carbon which are pivoted the arms CC. The lower holder, a tube may be used instead of the o 40 ends of these arms are provided with the pins strips A A. The lower carbon is inserted or points C C which engage the carbon A by lifting the piece D so as to free the ends near the base of its cone shaped end, so as to of the arms D D and allow the points D to hold it in position. A washer or sleeve C be separated. Then there is no current in surrounds the strips A A and is provided the lamp the ends of the two carbons are in 5 with the notches or recesses C 0 for the ends contact. \Vhen the current passes through of the arms C C. It will be seen that when the lamp the series coil B is energized and the ends of the arms C C arein the recesses attracts its core, and through the agency of of the said sleeve, the distance between the the lever B and pins B B lifts the upper carpoints C is fixed. bon holder points C C and carbon A, and I03 The lower carbonBis provided in the same strikes the are. As the carbons burn away manner with the pins or points D D fastened they are fed so as to be kept in contact with the points D and C the lower carbon being fed by means of the weight E and the upper carbon by its own weight. If for any reason the carbons get too far apart, the shunt coil 13 is strengthened so as to move the lever B downwardly and bring the points 02 and D closer together. The pins C C and D D are arranged so that they engage the carbons near the base of their cone shaped ends, and hence are not materially affected by the heat of the are. I prefer to have these points made of some non-corrosive material, as platinum or the like.
It will be seen that I have here a two car-' bon lamp that feeds both with and without variation in the current, and which is very short, and which has no carbon rod to get out of order. It will also be noticed that there are no sliding contacts, as the carbons are directly connected to the circuit.
I claim- 1. An arc lamp comprising a carbon holder with a carbon free to move therein, stops to limit the motion of said carbon, said stops being attached to pivoted arms, said pivoted arms having pivoted washers associated with their ends so that the distances between the stops are fixed when said Washers are in place but may be varied when the Washers are removed, substantially as described.
2. The combination in an arclamp, of a carbon holder with a carbon free to move therein, a lever pivoted to a standard and adapted to engage pins projecting from said carbon holder, a shunt magnet and a series magnet each having its core attached to one end of said lever and a lower carbon attached to a movable frame and provided with detaining points, substantially as described.
