Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SANDFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ke- Wanee, Henry county,Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Drawing Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation, part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view, part being broken away. Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

My invention relates to tools for. drawing pipe in the manufacture of buttweld pipe by drawing a skelp through a bell, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the tongs described and claimed in a certain application, Serial No. 529,671, of even date herewith, filed by Alfred M. Hewlett, of Kewanee, Illinois. I accomplish this object as hereinafter specified and as illustrated in the drawings.

In the drawings, 5 indicates a stationary jaw. 6 indicates a movable jaw pivoted to said stationary jaw by a pivot 7, as shown in 8 indicates a stationary handle which is fix- 9 indicates a rod which is movable longitudinally of said stationary handle and carries at its forward end a plate 10 having an inclined slot 11, as shown in Fig. 2.

19 indicates a support for the rod 9, which prevents the rod from moving sidewise when it is reciprocated, as will be hereinafter described.

12 indicates a pin carrried by the movable jaw 6 near its rear end, which pin projects into the slot 11, as shown in Fig. 4.

By moving the rod 9 and plate 10 forward, the jaw 6 may be moved away from the jaw 5, and vice versa. The rod 9 is connected at its rear end by a pivot 13 to a lever 14 which is pivoted by a pivot 15 to the handle 8, the pivot 15 being forward of the lever 14, as shown in Fig. 2. As indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the lever 14: is provided with a slot 16 to receive the pivot 15, so that a slight longitudinal movement of the lever is permitted. By this construction, when the lever 14 is thrown forward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the jaws 56 may be opened by moving the movable jaw and the jaws may be closed by moving said lever in the opposite direction. It will be seen that when anything is gripped between the jaws, inasmuch as the pin 12 will not lie in the upper end of the slot 11, the pull upon the lever 14. will serve to tighten the grip of the jaws.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a pipe tongs, the combination with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw pivoted thereto,

of a handle connected to said fixed jaw, a plate movable longitudinally of said handle, said plate having an inclined slot 11, and a pin carried by said movable jaw and projecting into said slot, substantially as described.

2. In a pipe tongs, the combination. with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw pivoted thereto, of a handle connected to said fixed jaw, a plate movable longitudinally of said handle, said plate having an inclined slot 11, a pin carried by said movable jaw and projecting into said slot, and a lever connected to said plate for moving it longitudinally, substantially as described.

3. In a pipe tongs, the combination with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw pivoted thereto, of ahandle connected to said fixed jaw, a plate movable longitudinally of said handle, said plate having an inclined slot 11, a pin carried by said movable jaw and projecting into said slot, and a lever pivoted to said handle and connected to said plate, said lever being adapted to be turned to a position parallel with the handle and being movable longitudinally of said handle, substantially as described.

4. In a pipe tongs, the combination with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw pivoted thereto,

of a handle connected to said fixed j aw, a plate 5 movable longitudinally of said handle, said plate having an inclined slot 11, a pin carried by said movable jaw and projecting into said slot, a rod 9 connected to said plate, and a support for said rod, substantially as described.
