PIPE-DRAWING TOOL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0; 537,456, dated April. 16, 1 895.

Application led April 24, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED M. HEWLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, I-Ienry county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Drawing Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one end of the skelp.

My invention relates to tags for drawing butt weld pipe, and has for its object to provide an improved tag which may readily be attached to the skelp after it has been heated and be readily removed therefrom after the pipe has been formed. I accomplish this object as hereinafter specified and as illustrated in the drawings.

That which I regard as new will be set forth in the claims.

In the drawings-4 indicates the body of the tag, which is provided at one end with a projecting jaw 5 which carries a depending lug or projection 6. The inner face of the jaw 5 is concave, as illustrated in the drawings. The lug 6 is adapted to pass through a hole 7 formed in the end of the skelp 14 before its introduction into the furnace.

8 indicates a tubular handle, which is secured at one end to the body 4 of the tag and at its other end carries a suitable collar or' other device by means of which it may be connected to the drawing mechanism.

9 indicates a rod which passes through the handle 8 and through a suitable passage in the body 4, the end of the rod being adapted to tit into a suitable recess in the projection 6, as shown in Fig. 1. The rod 9 is of sufficient length so that it may 'readily be operated for the purpose of securing the tag to the heated skelp.

l0 indicates a bell. 11 indicates a bell holder. The diameter of the body 4 is such as to permit of its being drawn through the bell 10.

At each side ofthe rod 9 are projecting pins l2, which move in slots 13 formed in the body 4, which pins serve to limit the movement of the rod 9.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pipe-drawing tool having a fixed lateral projection adapted to enter a hole in the skelp, and a sliding rod adapted to be moved into engagement with said projection, Whereby said tool may be locked to the skelp, substantially as described.

2. A pipe-drawing tool having a fixed lateral projection which enters an orifice in the skelp and is provided with a recess or hole therein, and a sliding rod adapted to enter said recess or hole to lock the skelp in position on the projection, substantially as described.

3. A pipe-drawing toolhaving a body and a projection, a tubular handle, and a rod Inovable in said handle and adapted to engage said projection, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a body 4 having a projecting jaw 5 and a lug 6 depending therefrom, said lug having a recess, of a tubular handle, and a rod 9 movable in said han- ALFRED M. HEWLETT.
