Description

{No Model.) v A. M. HEWLETT. APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING PIPE.
Patented Apr. 16, 1895;
llilllllllllll HHH l I UNITED STATES PATENT GEE-Ion.
ALFRED M. HEWLETT, OF KEWANEE,ILLINOIS.
APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,454, dated April 16, 1895.
Application filed April 24, 1894. Serial No. 508,889. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. HEWLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Pipe, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom pan ying drawing, in which the figure is a side elevation.
My invention relates to the manufacture of I butt-weld pipe by drawing a strip or skelp through a bell, and has particularly to do with mechanism for supporting the bell or bells through which the skelp is to be drawn.
The object of my present invention is to provide means whereby the bell holder or holders may be held in position to receive the 7 indicates a bell-holder support, consisting of standards arranged at opposite ends of the furnace door and secured by braces 8 to the front of the furnace.
9 indicates a frame, which is mounted upon pivots 1O journaled in suitable bearings in the bell-holder support 7. The frame 9 is adapted to carry one or more bell-holders 11, which bell-holders are of suitable construction to support bells 12.
13 indicates an arm, which projects rearwardly from the frame 9 and is connected by a bar 14. to a foot lever 15 pivoted upon a support 16.
The pivots 10 are located at the rear portion of the frame 9, so that said frame is normally turned down into a position substantially parallel with the bell-holder support 7, through gravity. The bell-holders do not therefore interfere with the charging of the furnace.
When a skelp is to be drawn, the operator, by pressing the foot lever 15, may turn the bell-holders 11 into a horizontal position,
when they will intercept the bells in the usual manner.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with pipe drawing mechanism, of bell-holding devices tilting toward or from the furnace to expose the furnace door and permit the charging of the furnace, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a furnace, of a bell-holder tilting in a direction toward or from the furnace and dropping by gravity out of operative position, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination with supporting devices, of a tilting bell-holder which drops by gravity out of operative position, and means for raising the bell-holder into operative position to intercept the bell, substantially as described.
4. The combination with transversely movable drawing mechanism, of a tilting bellholder mounted independently of the drawing mechanism and dropping by gravity out of operation, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination with pipe drawing mechanism, of a bell-holder support mounted independent of the pipe-drawing mechanism, and a tilting bell-holder carried by said support, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a bell-holder support 7, of a frame 9, pivots 10 carried by said frame, arm 13, foot lever 15, and a connecting device connecting said foot lever and said arm, substantially as described.
ALFRED M. HEWLETT.
