APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING PIPE. No. 537,453. Patented Apr. 16, 1895.
ALFRED M. HEWLETT, OF KEW'ANEE, ILLINOIS.
APPARATUS FOR MANUFACTURING PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,453, dated April 16, 1895.
Application filed April 24, 1894. Serial No. 508,888. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, ALFRED M. HEWLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Pipe, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view. elevation, part of the bell holder being in section; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the bell holder support.
- draw bench, the draw bench having an endless chain to which the tag was adapted to be connected. As it is necessary in order to economize time that several strips or pieces of skelp should be placed in the furnace side by side, in order to avoid the necessity of changing the position of the skelps in the furnace it has been attempted to make the draw bench movable laterally in front of the furnace so that the bell could be moved opposite the different skelps, as it is necessary to do to make good pipe.
In my application of even date herewith I have shown improved apparatus for manu facturing pipe by which the objections incident to the use of the old laterally-movable draw bench are avoided, such construction consisting essentially in a series of bell holders arranged in front of the furnace, such bell holders being detached from the drawing mechanism, which consists of a draw bar pro- -vided with suitable mechanism for reciproeating it. For certain purposes, however, it is desirable that the bell should be. held slightly above the lower edge of the fur-.
Fig. 2 is a side charged, thereby avoiding the above objection, and this, broadly stated, is the principal feature of the invention which forms the subj ect matter of this application.
My invention further consists in the provision of means for automatically operating the bell holders.
That which I regard as new will be set forth in the claims.
In the drawings,4t indicates a furnace, of which 5 is the door.
6 indicates the drawing mechanism, which may be of any approved form. I prefer, however, to use the form shown in my application above referred to, in which a laterallymovable draw bar 7 is connected to a bar 8, which bar is connected to a piston rod 9 working in a steam cylinder 10. A hand lever 11 is provided for controlling the admis sion of steam to the cylinder 10 so that the piston rod 9 maybe reciprocated toward and from the furnace for drawing the pipe. As the drawing mechanism is fully described in my said application I do not consider it necessary to describe it in detail herein.
12 indicates a bell-holder support, which is located in front of and at such a distance from the furnace that the bells will be supported at the proper distance from the furnace. The bell-holder support 12 is provided at each endwith standards 131 l. Between each pair of such standards is mounted a sliding block 15, the standards 131L serving as guides for the blocks 15, so that said blocks are vertically movable between said standards. 16, which is adapted to carry bell holders 17, which are preferably ot' the form shown in my application hereinbefore referred to, the box 16 being curved so that the bell holders will be arranged in the arc of a circle.
18 indicates bells, which are adapted to be carried by the bell holders.
19 indicates a shaft, which is supported by the bell-holder support 12, and extends longitudinally of the same.
20 indicates links, one of which is fixedly connected to the shaft 19 near each end thereof, which links are pivotally connected to links 21, the latter links being connected also to the blocks 15, thereby forming a toggle joint at each end of the bell-holder sup- Connecting the two blocks 15 is a box port. The-length of the links 20-2lis such that when they'are in line with-each other the bell-holders will be in such position as to hold the bell at the proper height, whereas, by moving said links out of line, the bellholders may be lowered sufficiently topermit. of ready access to the furnace.
In order to operate the bell holders automatically I provide alever-22,-which is pivoted upon the bar '8, and carries at its free end a hook 23 adapted to engage the upper end of a cross head 24 carried-by the shaft 19, as best shown in 'Fig. 2, the end of said lever being beveled so-that it will belifted automatically to permit the hook to catch said cross head when the bar sis moved -tocause the lever22 to release .the cross headfla when the links 20-21 comeinto line withea'chl other,'and thereby-lock the "bell holders ing their:nppermostposition. The bell holders, areautomatically;returned to their lowermost; position when the pipe has been drawn; through the bellby means of-an arm 27- carried: by the bar 8, which arm is'adaptedto-strike, the hooked end of a rod 28'which is connectedj to the lower-end oflthe cross head 24, therebyi moving such'rodsufficiently-to rock the shaft 19 and cause'thebell holders to descend. :It. will be seen that by-this construction the bell holders are moved into :position to support the bells when the vpipe-is to be-drawn, and after-the operation of drawingis completed are immediately moved away from the door of the furnace, so that the furnace may be charged without incon-venience.
.As it is evident that thebellholding devices are not dependentupon'any particular drawing mechanismfl do not-wish to :limitmyself to'the use of such devices in connection with drawing mechanismof any particular-form; except that, as far as the specific mechanism: for automatically operating the bell holdersiis concerned, it can be used only with reciprocating drawing mechanism.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is'- 1. The combination with thepipe-drawing mechanism, of bell-holding devices, mounted independent of thedrawing'mechanism and movable away from the-furnace door to permit the charging of the furnace, and mechanism for operatingsaid bell-holding devices to the furnace, substantially-as described.
3. The combination with pipe drawing mechanism, of a vertically movable bellholder supported independent of said pipedrawing mechanism, and means for moving the bell-holdervertically, substantially as described.
4;. The combination with pipe --drawing mechanism, of a vertically movable bellholder supported independent of said :pipedrawing mechanism, substantially as described.
5. The combi'nation'witha furnace, and pipe drawing mechanism, of a=verticallymovable bell-holder located between-the9pipe drawing mechanism and the furnace, and meansfor automatically raisingthe bell-holder when a skelp or stripis to be drawn, substantially as described.
6. The combination with zzpipe-drawing mech'anism, of a vertically movable bellholder, automatically operating mechanism for moving said bell holder into operative position as the'skelp is @drawn from th'e furnace, and means for moving said bell holder out of operative position after the pipe has been formed, substantially asdesc'ribed.
7. The combination with supporting devices,= of a vertically movable-bell holder,'and
automatically operating mechanism actuati'ngthebell holderto move the bell or bells into position to receive the skelp and away from-in'front'of the furnacedoorto permit the furnace to be charged, substantially as described.
8. The combinationwith reciprocatingpipedrawing mechanism, of a'vertically movable bell holder, and mechanism automaticallyoperated by the drawing mechanism foractuating said bell holder to'move the-bell or'bells into position to receive the skelp andout of the way to .permitthefurnaceto be charged, substantially as described.
9. The combination with Jpipe --drawing mechanism, and a bell-holdersupport mounted independent of-the pipe drawing-mechanism, ofone or more bell holders vertically movable uponsaidsupport, and toggle mechanism for moving said bell holders vertically,
substantially as described.
10. The combination-withabell-holdersupport, of sliding blocks 15,abox connected to -saidblocks andadapted toicarry bellholders,
a shaft 19, links 2021 connected to said-shaft, and means for rocking said shaft for the purpose of moving said bell holders vertically, substantially as described.
11. The combination with supporting de- IIO by said drawing mechanism, a rod 28 connected to said cross head and adapted to be engaged by said arm, a cam 25, and means for releasing said lever 22 from said cross head after the bell holders have been moved into 0 perative position, substantially as described.
