STPECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,350, dated April 9, 1 895. I Application filed December 14,1894. Serial No. 531,839. (NomodaL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM 0. Mom, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a vertical steam generator of a series of sections mounted one upon another in a manner which will expose the greatest amount of surface to the action of the products of combustion.
My invention also relates to thespecial construction of some of the parts, reference be" ing had to the accompanying drawings, in

A is the fire pot mounted in any suitable manner upon the base section A" of the furnace. The fire pot is made hollow forming a water chamber a and has an extended rim a, forming an enlargement of the water chamberand supporting the ring sections described hereinafter. Projecting inwardly from the upper portion of the fire pot are a series of hollow fingers a communicating with the water chamber a and each finger'is, in the present instance, flat on the under side and curved on the upperside so as to prevent the accumulation of soot and yet not interfere with the coaling of the furnace.

The Water circulates in each section through the hub, spokes and rim and one or more sections similar in form to the section B can be mounted above the said section as illustrated in Fig.2, and these sections can communicate through the hubs b and passages b The hub of the lower section is closed and the hub of the upper section communicates with the crown section D, described hereinafter.

at equal distances apart, except at one point m where the short spokes b are dispensed with. The object of this arrangement is to so form the sections that when one section is placed upon another the upper section can be adjusted so that its spokes will be above the passages of the lower section, as clearly shown in the perspective view Fig. 5, so that the course of the products of combustion will be circuitous in its passage through the sections, thus insuring the proper heating of the sections.
v The sections are held together in the present instance, by tie bolts E, which extend through the rim 0. of the fire pot and through the passages 12 in the ring, sections and through the dome section. Packing may be inserted between the several sections so as to make them water and gas tight or the joints may be simply ground joints.
I prefer to form a tongue and groove joint between the sections as indicated in the several figures, which joint may be filled with suitable cement if necessary. Nipples may also be used as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 instead of the bolts or both may be used if desirable.
While the spokes of the ring sections may be beveled in any suitable manner so as to prevent the accumulation of soot, I preferably make the spokes double convex in cross section, the long axis being vertical as l find this arrangement gives the best circulation and the parts are considerably strengthened as each ring section is preferably made in a single casting, although this is not absolutely necessary.
D is the crown section having the dome d and the corrugated base (1' and these corrugations are broken at intervals by channels d Fig. 4, which carry oft any water that may accumulate in the corrugations when the water is drawn oft below the line of the dome. In the dome is a passage cl directly above each channel 0 in the ring section so that a cleaning tool can be inserted through this passage to clean the channels. These openings are provided with suitable covers. The crown section being made in a single casting is stiffened by the direct flue casing (1 which is formed in the crown section, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This flue communicates with a pipe M entering the smoke pipe M, as clearly illustrated in said figure. The crown section may be stiffened by columns extending from the corrugated base to the dome if found necessary. The pipe M extends to the fire pot section and communicates with a passage-O at this point.
F is a cast metal casing inclosing the lower portion-of the furnace and having therein the fire doorfand clean out openingsf,f'.
G is a casing mounted on the casing F and inclosing the ring sections leaving a dead space 0 which communicates at a the base with the annular passageG so that while the products of combustion do not circulate through this passage the air therein is kept at a certain temperature and acts as aprotector for the ring sections.
The water inlet pipe i communicates with the fire pot section and the steam pipes i communicate with the dome section.
While I have described my invention as a steam generator for heating purposes it will -be understood that it may be used as a hot water heateror a steam generator for power purposes Without departing from my invention, and that one or more ring sections may be used depending altogether upon the character of the work in which it is to be employed.
I claim as my invention- I. The combination in a steam generator, of the hollow fire pot section, having disconnected hollow fingers projecting over the fire, with aseries of hollow sections mounted above the fire pot and communicating therewith, substantially as described.
2. The combination of'the fire pot, a series of hollow ring sections having rims and spokes, one of said spokes being narrower than the others, whereby. the sections can be so arranged that the spokes of one section will alternate with the spokes of another section, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a steam generator, of the hollow fire pot section, having disconnected hollow fingers projecting inwardly around its upper edge, two or more ring sec- 66 tions each having a series of spokes, one set of spokes alternating with the other said ring sections being connected to the hollow fire pot, with a dome section, substantially as described. i
4. The combination of the fire pot section, having a hollow flange at its upper edge, and inwardly projecting fingers, with ring sections mounted on the flange of the fire pot section and communicating therewith, spokes in said ring section and channels in the rim of each ring section and in the flange of the fire pot section, a dome section mounted above the ring section, substantially as described.
5. The combination of. the fire pot section, the ring sections,a dome section having a crown and a corrugated base, said dome section communicating with the ring section, substantially as described.
6. The combination in a steam generator, of the fire pot section, one or more ring sections mounted thereon, the dome section mounted on the upper ring section and conr mun'icating' therewith, the base of said dome section being corrugated and having radial channels therein, substantially as described.
7. The combination in asteam generator, of the fire pot and dome, with a ring section consisting of a rim having channels therein and spokes and a hub, some of said spokes extending to the hub from the rim while others extend part way from the rim to the hub, and connected to the other spokes, substantially as described.
8. The combination of the fire pot, ring sections and dome, forming the generator, with an outer casing surrounding the ring sections,
