HEEL-'GAGE FOR MAKING HEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,150, dated April 9, l 895.

i Heels, of which the'following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in heel gages for making heels and it is carried out as follows, reference being hadfto the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure'l'represents a top plan view of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a cross section on the line 3-3 shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section on the line 2-2 shown in Fig l; and Fig. 4 represents a rear elevation of the said invention.

In making heels, they are built up of lifts placed one on the top of another, and pasted or nailed together. of pieces varying in size, the top lift being usually7 the smallest. The heel lifts after being laid one on the top of the other and united by pasting or nailing, are afterward removed from the heel making device and -ready for securing them to the soles of the boots or shoes for which they are intended. 4 v
My improved heel gage for making heels of any desired height or width is constructed as follows:
A represents a metal work plate adapted to be secured to the work bench in any suitable manner. The said work plate A has on its under side a guide projection or hub A', in a perforation in which is guided the vertically movable plunger or heel extractor C as shown. The said plunger is preferably made cylindrical in section but may be made of any other suitable form or shape without departing from the essence of my invention.
D is a lever pivoted at d on the under side of the plate A and having its rear arranged in contact with the lower end of theplunger O as shown in Fig. 3. -said shaft having secured to one of its ends a wheel or handle F by means of which the shaft f may be turned so as to raise or lower the gage E according to the height of the heel that is to be made.

On top of the slide G is adj ustably secured one or more heel guides H, H, as shown in Figs. l and 2, each such heel guide having a slotted shank H through'which passes a headed fastening screw bolt I which passes through a perforation in the slide G, and through a slotted perforation a in the plate A and is provided with a thumb nut i, on the under side of said plate A as shown in Fig. 2, by means of which the heel guides H and slide G may be adjustably secured in position to the plate A according to the width and con figuration of theheel that is being made.
K is a set screw passing through a screw threaded perforation in the rear of the plate A for the purpose of securing the gage E in ICO placed on top of each otheron the plate A with their breast ends in contact with the gage E and one of their sides in contact with the step like arranged heel guides I-I, H, as shown in the drawings, and said heel lifts are pasted or nailed together as may be desired, as one is placed above another during the building of the heel. The .heel lifts are thus placed above one another, the smallest one at the bottom, increasing in size upward-until the height of the gage E is reached when the heel is finished and may be removed from the plate A simply by depressing the handle D of the lever D by which the plunger C is raised cansing the `heel to be lifted above the table A, sufficient to permit the operator to remove it easily without prying it up by means of a knife or other tool usually employed vin heel making devices.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim isl. The herein described heel device consisting of a table A having a vertically movable plunger or extractor C, and a lever D for operating the latter combined with a vertically adjustable heel gage E, longitudinally adjustable slides G, G', and adjustable heel guides II, 1I, secured to such slides substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein described heel device consisting ofthe plate A, a vertically arranged plunger or heel extractor arranged therein and a lever for its operation having a stop device as described, combined with a vertically adjustable heel gage E, longitudinally adjustable slides G, G', and heel guides H, I-I, secured in an adjustable manner to such slides substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
