it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes reels, and consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully set forth, the essential features of which being pointed out particularly in the claim.

The object of the invention is to produce a clothes reel, of simple, strong and symmetric construction, and in which the arrangement is such as to provide for the vertical adjustment of the reel proper, to enable it to be raised andlowered at will, and securely locked at a high elevation, with the clothes thereon, when desired. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the post or stand, the reel arms being broken away. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a section of the post, showing the manner of mounting the reel thereon. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective of the upper end of the post, a portion of which is broken away, showing the cap therein and the sheave journaled in said cap.

Referring to the letters of reference, A designates the reel stand or post upon which the reel is supported, which is hollow, and is made preferably, of metal tubing of the requisite size. Secured to the outer face of said post, and running longitudinally thereof, is a key a that is adapted to enter freely, a way in the inner face of the sleeve B, which environs said post and is adapted to slide vertically thereon. This construction permits of the free vertical movement of said sleeve, but prevents it from turning on said post.

C designates a collar which encircles the sleeve B, and rests upon the annular shoulder b, formed at the lower end of said sleeve. This collar is adapted to revolve freely upon said sleeve, and is provided with a series of bosses c, which are tapped to receive the threaded inner ends of the radial arms D of the reel. These arms are also made of tubing and extending between them, are the lines d, upon which the clothes may be hung. Mounted on the upper end of the post is the hollow cap E, formed of two parts, each provided with a semi-circular depending flange e, so that when said parts are placed together, an annular'fiange is formed that enters the end of said post and securely retains said cap in place. Journaled between the sides of said cap, is a sheave F, over which passes a chain G. One end of said chain depends within the hollow post and is attached to a weight H, therein, and the other end is attached to the sleeve B, adapted to slide vertically upon said post. By this means, the weight H, counter balances the weight of the reel, enabling said reel to be easily adjusted and maintained at any degree of elevation.

To provide for actuating the reel so that it may be raised to a considerable elevation and secured in that position, the lever I is employed, as shown in Fig. 1. This lever is pivoted at fto the post A, and one end thereof is pivotally coupled at h, to the depending end of the'rod J, which is attached at its upper end to the sleeve B. With this construction, the operation of the free end of the le- 1 ver I will actuate the rod J to slide the sleeve B vertically, and raise or lower the reel, as shown by stipple and solid lines in Fig. 1.

The free end of the leverl is provided with an eye that is adapted to receive a staple n, secured in the base of the post, to which said lever may be secured by a lock 70. By this means when the clothes have been placed upon the reel, it may be elevated to such height as to carry the clothes above a point Where they would obstruct the way, at which height they will be less likely to become soiled while drying; and by locking the lever I, when the reel is so elevated, the clothes are comparatively safe, as they cannot be readily removed without lowering the reel.
