SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,702, dated April 2, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JARVIS PELOUBET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reed-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
In a reed-board characterized by my invention, I provide in conjunction with a series of reed-chambers. a corresponding series of resonant or auxiliary chambers which are closed with the exception of slots through which they respectively communicate with theirseparatelyallotted reed-chambers. Each auxiliary chamber communicates with its companion reed-chamber through a single slot and is employed for resonant purposes only, it being observed that I neither make provision for nor contemplate any circulation of air between the two communicating chambers.
By myin vention I have succeeded in securing a broader, fuller, and sweeter tone than can be produced by forming the opening through either the middle or end portion of the partition between the reed-chamber and auxiliary chamber, as heretofore proposed, and I also avoid all abruptness of sound and produce novel and extremely desirable efiects.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a section taken transversely through a reedboard embodying my invention, the openings between the auxiliary chambers and the reedchambers beingin the form of slots extending the length of the auxiliary chambers. Fig. 2 is a section through Fig.1 on line x-oc. Fig. 3 is asection taken on a horizontal plane through one of the auxiliary chambers in order to more clearly illustrate the form of opening through its bottom.
The reed-chambers A, contain reeds B, and are opened and closed by pallets O as usual. Over each series of reed-chambers is a series of auxiliary chambers D, severally allotted to the several reed-chambers and each permanently closed except at its bottom, at which point it is in open communication with its allotted reed-chamber through the mediu 111 of a slot E which can be extended along all or the greater portion of the length of the partition which is arranged between each reedchamber and its companion auxiliary chamber, and which provides the bottom of the auxiliary chamber. It is distinctly understood that in carrying out my invention so as to secure the desired results which oonsistin a positiveimprovement in tone and effects, the auxiliary chamber is permanently closed with the exception of the one opening formed by a slot which is cut through the partition between the auxiliarychamberandreed-chamber, and that I employsuch slot in contradistinction to an opening such as is described in Letters Patent of theUnited States No. 140,750, disclosing a reed-board having the opening formed through one end portion only of the partition between the two chambers. Said patent may be taken as illustrating a type of reed-board upon which my invention constitutes an improvement. In place of an opening either at one end portion only of the partition, or at its middle portion only, I provide a comparatively narrow slot extending along the partition and arranged parallel with the sides of the chamber, in which wayI provide the partition with a longitudinally arranged slot.
As herein illustrated the top of a reed-chamber forms the bottom of it allotted auxiliary chamber, and below each series of reed-chambers is the usual common passage or wind chamber E.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- A reed-board constructed With a reed-chamber and an auxiliary chamber separated from each other by a partition provided with a longitudinally extending slot, the auxiliary chamber being in open communication with the reed chamber only through said slot and being otherwise permanently closed.
