LIGHTING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, ISRAEL M. ROSE, a citi# novel means for occasioning the restoration of the parts to their normal positions, as will be hereinafter set forth.
It also consists in forming the shaft which carries the feeding and igniting devices of IieXible nature, so as to be adapted to conform to the requirements of different places of application.
It also consistsl of details of construction as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figs. 2, 3 and 4c represent side elevations of the parts shown in Fig. l in different positions. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 represent top or plan views of the parts shown in Figs. 2, 3 and t respectively. Figs. 8, 9 and lO represent views of a modification.

Referring to the drawings: A designates a shaft which is mounted in the tube B and carrieson its upper end the head C, a portion of the edge of which is cut away as at D. Connected with said head is a linger E, which projects radially and horizontally above said head. Aside of or adjacent to the tube B is a flattened or other shaped tube F, which receives the strip or piece G of ignitible material, the upper portion H of said tube F eX- tendingabove the tube B.
J designates a slide which is freely mounted on the upper end of the shaft A, and guided as at K on the portion H of the tube F, said slide also carrying the lip L, which extends in horizontal direction above said slide, it being noticed that said lip and the head C are so disposed that when the shaft A rotates, the
periphery of the head bears against the side of the lip L, and rides in vthe space below said lip, while the finger E rides freely over said lip and approaches the inner side of the portion H of the tube F.
The upper edge M of the tube B is of spiral form, or inclined to the adjacent end of the axis of the shaft A, and has a vertical portion N connecting the upper and lower points of said incline.
Projecting from the side of thc upper end of the shaft A is a pin P, which is adapted to' ride upon the spiral surface or edge M of the tube B, by which provision rising motions may be imparted to the head C and connected parts, as will be hereinafter more .fully explained.I In order to cause the return or lowering motion of said head and parts, I employ the spring Q, which bears against the handle or knob R of the shaft A, and the adjacent end of the tube B, it being noticed that said shaft is of the formofl a coil, so that its convolutions may expand and contract as the shaft is raised and lowered, and as it is iiexible it may be made to conform to curved or other shapes of tubes, thus permitting the application of the device, for instance to a lamp, so that the upper end of the strip G may be located adjacent to the nger E, while the handle or knob R is convenient of access at the side of the lamp. It will now be seen that when the shaft is rotated, the pin P rides on the spiral edge or surface M, thus raising the connected part of the shaft, and with it the slide J, the head C and 'finger or striker E. The head forces the lip L against the contiguous portion of the strip G, whereby as said lip rises, a sufficient length of the strip is raised with the same. The finger E comes kin contact with the side of the strip G, above the lip L, and by its friction .iguites the same, whereby a flame is produced above the wick S, sufficiently near thereto to ignite the same.
As the shaft A is raised, the spring Q is oompressed and the pin P passes the end of the spiral surface M, and drops along the vertical side N, whereby the shaft resumes its original position and condition, the slide with its lip L, the head O and linger E also lowering ready for repetition of the operation, so that the lip may again be pressed against the ICG adjacent portion of the strip, and said strip may be raised and struck or ignited as previously stated. When the cut-away portion D of the head C reaches the side of the lip L it is evident that the latter is released of the pressure previously occasioned by the periphery of said head, so that the lip withdraws from the strip and the latter is free to be raised when again engaged by said lip.
In Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, I show a rib or ange T, connected with the shaft U, a portion of said flange being cut away as at V, said shaft carrying a pin W which rides upon the spiral surface or edge X on the tube which contains said shaft U, said flange T being adapted to enter the side of the strip-receiving tube Y, and bear against the strip as shown at Y', in Fig. 8.
The upper end of the shaft U carries the finger or striker Z, it being evident that as said shaft is rotated, the ange T is raised by the action of the pin WV, on the surface X, and the flange T rises and rotates with it, said flange bearing against the strip, and as is evident,raising the same, and projecting a portion of the strip so that it willbe engaged by the finger or striker Z, and thus ignited.
In order to hold the strip during its operations, I employ a spring A', which is properly secured to the tube Y, and held in contact with said strip, as shown in Fig. 8.
Interposed between the knob or handle of the shaft U on the end of the tube or casing for said shaft is a spring U for returning said shaft to its lowermost position when the pin IV clears the highest point of the spiral edge X on said tube.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An igniting or lighting device consisting t of a shaft, means for rotating, raising and lowering the saine, means for engaging said shaft with an igniting strip, and means for striking said strip, said pai'ts being combined substantially as described.
2. A shaft provided with a head, and a finger or striker, a lip adapted to be pressed by said head against an ignitible strip, a guide for said lip, and means for raising said shaft with its connected parts, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. A rotary shaft carrying engaging and striking devices for an ignitible strip, a support for said shaft, and a pin on the latter, said support having a partial spiral surface on which said pin may ride and from which it may drop, thus eiecting the ascent and descent of said shaft and connected parts, said parts being combined substantiallyas described.
4:. A rotary shaft adapted to feed or advance an ignitible strip and frictionally engage with the same, said shaft being Hexible, substantially as described.
5. A rotary shaft, a head and finger thereon adapted to engage with an ignitible strip, a support for said shaft adapted to advance the same, and a spring for returning said shaft, said parts being combined substantially as described.
6. A rotating shaft carrying devices for feeding and igniting an ignitible strip, and mechanism for supporting, advancing and returning said shaft, said parts being coinbined substantially as described.
