FAUCET.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. FREY and GEORGE S. WHITE, citizens of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot, State of Maine, have invented certain newand usefullmprovements in Faucets; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved faucet and is particularly adapted for beer, ale and liquor barrels and kegs.
The invention consists of a thimble attachment adapted to be placed in the barrelor keg and provided with a valve to prevent the escape of gas and liquid, and a faucet attach-A ment which when connected with the thimble will open the valve and permit the liquid to be withdrawn.
The invention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1, is a sectional view of our improved attachment the valve being open. Fig. 2, is a view showing the valve closed and faucet removed, the faucet being shown in side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end View of the thimble and Fig. 4 is a View of the cam.
In carrying out our invention, we employ a thimble, A, provided with exterior threads, a, by means of which it is lscrewed into a barrel or keg. The thimble is also threaded internally at its rear end, for a short distance and near the forward end is formed an annular shoulder a providing a valve seat a2 and dividing the thimble into the rear chamber a3 and forward chamber a4 said latter chamber being made quite large as clearly shown.
Within the chamber a3 is Aarranged a plug B, which consists of a spindle b, threaded p0rtion b', and valve b2. The rear end of the spindle projects beyond the thimble, and the forwardend extends into the annular ange or shoulder a. The threaded portion b engages the threads at the rearend of the thimble, and the valve b2 seats against the seat a2. The threaded portion is also provided with a series of openings b4 by means of which the liquid passes from the barrel or keg to the chamber a3. An inwardly projecting lug a5 is also formed upbn the interior of the thimble at its forward end and projects into the chamber a4.
The faucet C, is tubular and is provided with a cock c. At its inner end it is formed with a slotted shank which passes into the annular shoulder a', and engages the' forward end of the spindle b. Adjacent to said shank is a collar c2, which is made in the form of a cam, and is slotted at a3, to permit said collar being passed back of the lug o5 into the chamber a4. This collar also has a slight extension c4 which prevents the parts being revolved too far. If preferred a washer can be arranged upon the shank of the faucet and also on the spindle of the plug in order to insure a perfectly tight t.
Now in operation the plug is screwed into the thimble from the rear until the valve binds tightly against its seat. The thimble is then screwed into a barrel or keg yand until the valve is unseated no liquid can escape, and by employing-a washer on the valve all dauger of leakage is avoided. When it is desired to draw liquid from the barrel, the faucet is attached. In doing this the cam faced collaris slipped past the lug, a5, and the slotted shank engages the end of the valve spindle. The faucet is then revolved so that the cam faced collar bearing on the lug forces the faucet tightly into the chamber, 0.4, and the shank revolving will revolve the valve stem and unseat the valve. The liquid in the chamber, o3,
is then free to pass into the tubular faucet C, and by turning the cock on and off, the liquid can be withdrawn at pleasure.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a thimble threaded exteriorly, and interiorly at its rear end, and having an interior annular shoulder intermediate its ends,and an inwardly projecting lug at its forward end, a plug comprising a spindle, a
threaded rear ond, and a Valve near the forward end of said spindle, said rear end having a series of openings to permit the ingress of liquid, and a faucet having a slotted rear 5 end and e. cmu shaped collar mounted upon said faucet, and slotted as described, and carrying an extension adjacent to said slot substantially as shown and described.
