Be it knownthat I, GEORGE H. HUL TT, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Devices for Unloading Cars; and I do hereby declare tlie following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention relates to an improvement in portable devices for unloading railroad cars,
and is designed more particularly as an improvement ,on the construction disclosed in my Patent No. 516,053, granted March 6, 1894:.
My present improvements consist more part1cular1y in improved means for operating the discharging trough through which the coal or other material is discharged; in means for removing the end or end gate of the car, and in means for preventing the coal or other material 'from falling out at the sides during the operation of tilting the car.

A represents a railway constructed to receive the truck B, which latter is mounted on 0 wheels 0 arranged in pairs and is adapted to travel back and forth parallel to the pier or water front, as shown, or parallel to bins or,
other repositories designed to receive coal or material usually carried in bulk. The wheels 5 C are asstated arranged in pairs, each pair 1 constituting in effect a truck, the trucks so formed being pivotally connected to the main truck B, so as to enable the wheels to follow inequalities in the track without straining the parts. This truck Bis provided on its upper face with a bearing or way for the rollers D, which latter are carried by the ringE. Resting on the rollers D, and secured to the truck by a suitable king. bolt or equivalent device is the rotary platform F, which latter carries a suitable engine and boiler, or electric or othermotors-for actuating the drums and other movable parts. The platform is rotated by means of the rack and pinion ordinarily employed for that purpose, and is provided with the uprights F and G, the former being considerably longer or higher than the latter and connected thereto by the braces G, G
The two shorter uprights G are connected together at the tops and at intermediate points if desired, while the uprights F are also connected at their tops by the braces G Pivotally mounted on the upper ends of the shorter uprights G is the inclined platform H, which latter consists of preferably two paral- 7o lel girders G (see Fig.3) located a proper distance apart and connected at intervals through their length, forming in effect a plat-- form. The platform thus formed is provided with rails, G (see Fig. 1) and is beveled at the 7 5 end of its longer arm (not shown) so that when in position the beveled ends of the rails will rest on the rails of the surface track and forma continuation thereof,so that a car on the surface track can, by the mechanism to be hereinafter described, be drawn up the inclined platform to the position shown in Fig. 1, discharged of its contents and lowered onto the same or onto another track.
The platform H is pivotedlto one side of the 8 5 center, and is provided at its outer or shorter endwith a bumper or buffer I and adjacent to the latter is the mouth of the discharging chute J. The chute J is open at its bottom, and discharges directlyinto trough J the shape of which is clearly shown in Fig. 3. This trough is open at its topand is provided with flanged rollers a at intervals along both sides of its bottom which run on the flanges b of the angle irons c constituting parts of the 5 girders, and is provided on its opposite-sides near its upper edge'with flanged rollers d which are designed to move in contactwith the lower aces of the'angle irons c also constituting parts of the girders.
Secured to the under side of the trough are the plates 6, to which is secured the free end of the plungerf. This plunger is carried by the hydraulic cylinder 9, which latter is supported at intervals by the beams h secured to the under side of the girders which constitute the body of the tilting platform. Water un der pressure directly from pumps or from an accumulator (not shown) on the rotary platform is conveyed through flexible or telescopic pipes or by any other of the well known means in common use to the cylinder 9 at a point in front of the plunger head, and operates to govern or control the outward movement of the trough, hold it in any desired position and restore it to its normal position within the tilting platform as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. If desired, water can also be introduced behind the plunger head so that the trough can be forcibly pushed out in the event of clogging or if the weight of the coal should be insufiicient. After the platform has been tilted and a portion of the coal or other material discharged into the chute and from the latter to the trough, the Weight of the coal tends to force the trough outwardly. Hence by releasing the water in front of the plunger the trough will descend by gravity and can be stopped by simply shutting off the water, and elevated by admitting water under pressure. In this device, as in the patent hereinbefore referred to, the trough is provided with gates at its end and one in its bottom through which the coal can be discharged, the gates when open acting as deflectors for the coal.
Located under and carried by the the tilting platform is a second hydraulic cylinder 71. (see Fig. 2) the plunger of which is connected to chain 2'. This chain z passes along the under side of the tilting platform to the sheavej and from thence up to the small winding drum k on the operators cage Z. This drum is carries two larger drums m around which chains 11 are wound, the chains 1, and n being passed around their drums in opposite directions so that when one is wound the other will unwind and vice versa. Chains n carry hooks or other devices for engaging the end gate of the car for elevating same.
Water under pressure is admitted on both sides of the plunger head in cylinder h, and is conveyed to said cylinderthrough flexible or other pipes, and the movements of this plunger and also the plunger which actuates the trough are under the control of the operator located in cage Z. By admitting water to both sides of the plunger head in cylinder h chains n carrying the gate hooks can be elevated or lowered at the will of the operator.
The operators cage Z is located at the outer end of the shorter arm of the platform in a position over the chute. Pivoted t0 the operators cage at the point a, or at the top of the buffer is one end of the shield or frame P, the opposite end being supported by rods 0 which engage the girders G2 as shown in Fig. 1, thus leaving the shield free to accommodate itself to the top of the car and supporting the shield when the car is removed. This shield P is designed to occupy a position above the car and is preferably open on top, the two sides or two frames being connected by yokes 19. These frames form in effect continnations of the sides of the car, and prevent the coal from rolling off at. the sides while the car is being tilted.
The trough directs the coal or other contents of the car to any part of the hold or bin, and the gates at the end thereof are actuated by ropes or chains under the control of the operator whereby the discharge can be regulated both as to quantity and direction.
After the car has been discharged of its load, the platform is tilted so as to carry the end thereof well out of the hold or bin, and the rotary platform is then turned so as to bring the beveled end of the tilting platform over a track onto which the empty car is to be run. The platform is then lowered onto said track and the empty car lowered, after which the platform is turned to the track having the loaded cars thereon, and another one carried up and discharged as described.
Lisa hydraulic cylinder pivotallyorloosely mounted on truck B and provided with a plunger, the free end of which is connected to the tilting platform as shown. By means of this plunger and suitable means for forcing water therein the tilting platform can be tilted from the position shown in Fig.1 so as to bring the discharge end well down over the boat. By permitting the water to escape from the hydraulic cylinder the opposite end of the platform is lowered onto the track.
The platform H is provided with a sheave H, around which passes chain M. The free end of this chain is adapted to be attached to the car coupler, while the opposite end thereof is secured to drum N after passing around sheaves N N. Thus when the platform is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the chain M attached to a car the rotation of the drum N which is actuated by a suitable motor causes the car to move up the incline until it comes in contact with the buffer. The drum is then looked against rotation, and the platform tilted by the mechanism previously described.
By mounting the tilting platform on a truck .the entire apparatus can be moved lengthwise the vessel so as to bring the discharging end thereof over the several hatchways, thus permitting the entire cargo to be stored without shifting the boat.
Instead of employing hydraulic devices for tilting the platform chains can be employed.
I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to details of construction, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

536,209 i v v 2 Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f 1. In a portable device for unloading cars, the combination with a truck a rotary platform thereon, and a tilting platform "carried by the rotary platform, of a bufier near the discharge end of the tilting platform, a chute through which the material passes, a slidable trough carried by the tilting platform and communicating with the chute, and hydraulic devices for actuating said sliding trough substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a lengthwise tilting platform pivoted at-a point between its ends and provided witha track on which cars maybe run and supported, of a shield pivoted to the tilting platform and extending lengthwise the car and adapted to rest over and in close proximity to the sides of the car, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a truck, a'rotary platform thereon and a lengthwise tilting platformpivoted at a point between its ends to the rotary platform, of a shield attached to the tilting platform and extendinglengthwise over the car, the said shield resting approximately over the upper side edges of the car, and a buffer adjacent to the pivoted end of the shield, against whichrthe car abuts when in position to discharge its contents.

In a portable device for unloading cars, the combination with a truck and a rotary platform thereon, of a tilting platform car-- ried by the rotary platform, a buffer and chute on said tilting platform and means carried by said tilting platform for elevating and lowering the end gate of the car.
5. In a portable device for unloading cars, the combination with a truck and a rotary platformthereon, of a tilting platform carried by the rotary platform, a buffer and chute on said tilting platform, and an operators cage located adjacent to the buffer and chute, substantially as set forth.
