ANCHOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,177, dated March 26, 1895. Application filed October 10, 1893- Serial No. 437,772; (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of J efierson and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Anchors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain improve-- ments in anchors particularly for anchors which are adapted for use upon small boats such as steam launches.

The object of the invention is to produce an anchor which will lie perfectly fiat when not in use and to so construct the same that the flukes will fall at an angle to the shank when combines great strength with small weight.

My said invention consists in a certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the various partsof the same all of which I will now proceed to pointout and describe reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my said invention, showing the flukes in the position they assume when in use; Fig. 2, a section taken longitudinally through the head, showing flukes lying flat; Fig. 3, a cross section taken on line w-x of Fig. 2.

D are independent flukes having journals d which are mounted in opposite ends of the hollow cross head, each fluke thus having an independent movement. I

Eare transverse segmental slots in the cross head and F are pins or stops secured in the inner ends of the journals of the cross head and engaging with the segmental slots E limit the radius of movement of the independent flukes. When the anchor is stored the flukes rest perfectly flat upon the deck. When the anchor is let go the flukes make a partial revolution and readily take hold upon uneven bottom.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination in an anchor of a shank having a hollow cross head, independent flukes provided with journals mounted in opposite ends of the cross head, pins or stops secured to said journals and engaging segmental slots in the cross head to limit the radius of movement of the flukes, substantially as shown and described, whereby each fluke will have an independent movement.
