HEEL-NAILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,079, dated March 19, 18.95. Application filed November 20,1894. Serial No. 529,402. (No model.)

Be it known that I, J oHN RHINES, ot New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Heel-Nailing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Mydmprovements relate to machines for nailing the heels of boots and shoes, and have for their object to provide a simple and reliable mechanism for bending the rand into the requisite shape and inserting it between the sole and the heel plate.
Other objects and'features of the invention will appear from the description following hereinafter.
The various points of novelty will be specilied in the appended claims.
The accompanying drawings, to which reference is to be had, represent so much of a heel-nailing machine as is necessary for the disclosure of lny invention.

The improved heel-nailing machine com prisesya table Awhichis supported by means of legs B (Figs. 4 and 7),-or in any other suitable mannenl' The tablecarries a heel-supportingV plate (l,and the said plate preferably is exchangeable in order that the machine may be used for various sizes of heels. For this purpose, the heel supporting plate O may be secured to or formed integral with a removable slide D, having guided movement in the table A, as will be seen best in Figs. 1 and 4. To the underside of the slide D is secured a bufferplate E. The plates C and E, and the slide D are provided with aseries of holes l,and when the plate is in its normal posi-` Y able mechanism (not shown) whereby the follower may be depressed. A spring 3 is coiled around the rod 2 and abuts against the follower H and also' against a bearing 4 through which passes the rod 2. The spring thus has a tendency to throw the follower upward. In order to hold the follower in a depressed position, I provide two latches 5 having sliding movement in the legs B or other parts of the machine, and normally held in an inner position by means of springs 6, so as to project above the lower plate 7 of the follower and form an abutment therefor. The latches have apertures-engaged by the bell crank levers 8 which are pivoted to brackets 9 and may be operated through the medium of rods or other connections 10, to draw the latches outward and thereby release the follower. The table A is also provided with slideways 11 arranged transversely, and in the said slideways is constructed to move a double slide J, consisting of two parts l2 and 13, capable of a sliding movemeut relatively to each other. The rear portion of the table A constitutes a slideway for a slide K, which is adapted to move forward and backward, and carries a standard L, into which fits an arm 19 extending from a socket 20. To the socket is pivoted a cani lever 21, constructed to depress the rod 22 carrying a plunger 23 at its lower end. A spring 24 serves to return the plunger to the upper position. The arm 19 is secured to its standard L in any suitable manner, for instance by means of apin 25. When the slide K is in its forward position (see full lines in Fig. 7), the plunger 23, whose shape conforms to that of the heel, is in vertical alignment with the heel supporting plate C.
To the slide K are pivoted two curved bars 26, having pivotal connections with two links 27, each of which is connected, at its outer end, to a link 2S, which also connects with one of the sliding plates M. These plates extend through a recess in the slide L, but have no direct connection with the latter. They are each provided with a slot 29 rangingiu the direction in which the slide K is adapted to move. The rear end 30 of each slot, however, The slots 29, 30 are engaged by guide pins 31, secured tothe table A. The plates M are further provided with diagonal slots 32 converging at their rear ends, and the said slots are also engaged by pins 33 secured to a slide N which has guided movement in the slide K in the same direction that the latter is adapted to move. A handle 34 is xed to the slide N. The forward portions of the plates M are curved, as shown at 35, so as to conform with the shape of the heel.
The inner ends of the links 27 carry brackets 36 in which are formed bearings for a flexible shaft O. This shaft at intervals carries eccentrics or cams 37, which are adapted to act on the upper members of a series of clips whose office is to hold the rand P. The said clips consist of lower members 3S and upper members 39. Corresponding upper and lower members are connected through the m edium of links 40, while the lower members are pivotally connected with each other and with the links 27 by means of links 41. It will be observed that the upper members 39 are located in vertical alignment with alternate lower members 38. See Fig. 4. The upper members, as shown in Fig. 8, are provided with openings for the passage of posts 42, in which the shaft O is supported. Each of the upper members also carries a spring 43, in engagement with the corresponding cam 37 of the shaft O. In order to turn the latter, cranks or handles 44 are provided at its ends. For the sake of clear-ness the posts 42 have been omitted in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4.
Between the upper members 39, are arranged followers 45 which have guided Inovement in a direction perpendicular to the shaft O, each of the followers being slotted, as at 46,
to receive a guide pin, 47, secured to the corresponding lower member 38. Springs 48, bearing against the followers and the pins 47, serve to keep the followers normally in an outward or rearward position, as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 5. The central lower member 38, is preferably pivoted to the table A, asilidicated at 49 in Fig. 1.
The machine is operated as follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, pegs Q are placed point upward in the holes 1G of the upper slide 13, in the manner shown in Fig. 9. The slides l2 and 13 are then moved inward, that is, to the left, until the stop 17 abuts against the heel-supporting plate C, (Fig. 9.) Thereupon the upperslide is moved farther to the left as far as the slots 15 will allow, the result being that the pegs Q drop through the holes 16 into the holes l, to rest on the plu ngers F, the pointsof the pegs being approximately flush with the upper surface of the heel supporting plate C. The slides l2 and 13 are then returned to their original positions. The operator then places the heel plate R on the plate C (Fig. 5), and the rand P between the upper and lower members of the clips, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the thin edge of the rand projecting over the heel plate at the rear end thereof. The shaft O is turned by means of the cranks or handles 44, causing the cams 37 to depress the upper members 39 of the clips, whereby the rand is securely held in the clips. The slide K is then moved forward into the position illustrated by Fig. 2, and in consequence thereof the chain of clips assumes a curved form, the innerends of the lower members 33 abutting against the heel supporting plate C. The plunger 23 at this timeis in vertical alignment with the plate (1, and the sole S rests on the rand P and the heel plate R. During the forward movement of the slide K the plates M remain separated from each other as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pins 3l traveling to the rear ends of the longitudinal slots 29, while the pins 33 remain at the rear ends of the slots 32. Hereafter the operator depresses the plunger 23 and pushes the slide N forward, thereby imparting to the plates M a double movement,

both forward and toward each other, untilthe plates practically touch each other at their inner edges. During this movement, the curved portions 35 or the plates M, come in contact with the outer ends of the followers 45, and force the latter inward (Figs. 3, 6 and 7), whereby the rand P is pushed inward until its outer edge is flush with that of theheel. The follower H is then released by a pull on the connections .10 to withdraw the latches 5 from engagement with the plate 7 of the follower. The spring 3 will throw the follower upward (Fig. 7) and the pegs Q resting on the plungers F will be driven through the heel plate R, the rand P, and the sole S. Thereupon the follower His depressed until the latches 5 are above the plate 7, and the plunger 23, the shaft O, and the slides K and N are returned to their original positions, when the operation may be repeated as described.
I desire it to be understood that I do not confine myself t0 the exact constructions of the peg lconveying and the rand bending mechanism shown in the drawings, but that various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the claims. I may also add to the parts hereinbefore described, a cutter for severing the ends of the rand in case they should project in front of the heel supporting plate C.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In combination with the heel nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to hold the rand and having an articulated connection with one another,
and means for movingthe ends of the series of clips toward the heel supporting plate to bend the rand conformably with the shape of the heel, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to hold .the rand and having an articulated connection with onev another, a slide having guided movement toward and from the heel-supporting plate, and an operative connection between the slide and the series of clips to bend the said series of clips around the heel-supporting plate, upon the movement of the slide, substantially asdescribed. l
3. In combination with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to hold the rand and having an articulated connection with one another, a slide having guided movement toward and from the heel-supporting plate, and bars pivotally connected to the slide and to the ends of the series of clips, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination', with the heel-nailing mechanism, the heel-supporting plate, the pivotally connected rand-holding clips, and means for bending the series of clips around the heel-supporting plate, of bearings ,connected to the clips, a liexible shaft journaled in the said bearings, and cams upon the shaft to close the clips by turning the shaft, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, of rand-holding clips whose lower members have an articulated connection with each other, while their upper members are movably connected vto the lower ones, bearings connected to the lower clips, a flexible shaftjournaled in the said bearings, springs secured to the upper clip members, cams secured to the shaft and adapted to engage the springs to depress the upper members of the clips, and means for bending the series of clips around the heel-supporting plate, substantially as described.
6. In combination with the heel-nailing 'mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a
rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to hold the rand and having an articulated connection with one another, means for bending the series of clips around the heclsupporting plate, and means for removing the rand from between the clip members, substantially as described.
7 In combination with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to holdV the rand and having an articulated connection with one another, means for bending the series of clips around the heel-supporting plate, followers adapted to engage the outer edge of the rand, and means for moving the followers inward to force the rand from between the clip members, substantially as described.
8. In combination with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a rand-bending device consisting of a series of clips constructed to hold the rand and having an articulated connection with one another, means for bending the series of clips around the heel-supporting plate, followers arranged between the clips and adapted toy engage the outer edge of the rand, springs for pressing the followers outward, and movable parts adapted for engagement with the outerends of the followers to move the same inward, substantially as described.
9. In combination with the heel-nailing mechanism and the heel-supporting plate, a
rand-bending device consisting of a series of.
clips constructed to hold the rand and having an articulated connection with one another, a slide having guided movement toward and from the heel-supporting plate, an operative connection between the slide and the series of clips to bend the said series of clips around the heel-supporting plate upon the movement of the slide, a series of spring-pressed followers arranged between the clips and having a sliding connection therewith, plates having guided movement and provided with curved portions adapted to engage the outer ends of the said followers to force the same inward, an operative connection between the slide and the plates to cause them to move in unison, and another slide having guided movement in the lirst named slide and operatively connected to the said plates to move the same independently of the first named slide, substantially as described.
10.
